Missing Person: Debra Kay Manial

Details from a government source (might be paraphrased): Manial was last seen at the Indersol Tree farm in Dobbins with a group of friends cutting down Christmas trees. When the group was getting ready to leave Manial walked in front of the group, never to be seen again.

Last contact: December 19th, 1982 (Sunday); went missing in the morning, reported missing at noon. I see some sources stating that she went missing on December 12th. However, NamUs says December 19th. Also, the journalism starts on Monday, December 20th and states she went missing on Sunday, presumably the most-recent Sunday or else they would specify.

Last location: Dobbins, California. Specifically, Yuba River area, east of Dobbins. Near the Indersol Tree Farm, according to NamUs. This tree farm was called Ingersol Tree Farm from other sources. Also, journalism mentioned a place called Bullards Bar dam.

Age when Debra Kay Manial disappeared: 29 according to NamUs, 28 years old according to early journalism. However, 29 appeared to be the correct age.

The age in the journalism appears to be wrong.
She recently turned 29 as of her disappearance date.

BMI means body mass index. It is meant to describe someone's healthy body weight relative to their height. It is food for thought as to how someone may have looked. However, it is meant as a guide only and does not account for all body types. 

Debra Kay Manial had a BMI of 24.03. Debra Kay Manial was at a HEALTHY WEIGHT by BMI standards at the time of her disappearance.

Has Debra Kay Manial been found?

I researched the missing person's case of Debra Kay Manial tonight. From what I gathered, she and eight friends (nine people total) went out on a Sunday morning to find a Christmas tree. On their return to their vehicle, Debra walked ahead of the group for some reason. She has not been seen since and was reported missing at about noon on that day. The way it read, she must have been last seen sometime between 11am and noon on December 19th, 1982.

There was a large search for her. However, there were both rain and snow storms in the time frame that followed. The area was considered dangerous for walking, which brings into play the chance that she slipped down a slope. 

Debra Manial was not originally from the Sacramento area. That would suggest that she wasn't too familiar with the terrain. I think she was from Michigan as per the clipping below from The Saginaw News. There was an obituary for her mother in 2014 in The Saginaw News. In this obituary, it's clear that the family considers Debra to be deceased (May 15th, 2014, page 6).

I did feel like that may have happened to her and then the treacherous weather impeded the search efforts. However, other scenarios are possible, like abduction or self harm. The search for her was called off on December 28th, 1982 as it was thought that she must have perished by then, if she was in the rugged area.

What stood out in this case was simply that she walked ahead alone. I found no statements as to why she did that. What also stood out is the amount of detailed information there is of her clothing. Amateurs working on this case could try to match her clothing/accessories to clothing/accessories found on Jane Does in the area.

A couple of contradictions that I noted was that she was described as 28 years old in the journalism, while NamUs lists her as 29. Also, the tree farm was called "Ingersol Tree Farm" in journalism, not Indersol Tree Farm as per NamUs.

This case reminded me of some other missing person's cases on this website. There have been quite a few people who have gone missing while out with a group in a natural setting. In the cases I am thinking of, the person separated from the group and was then lost.

Trenny Gibson went missing while on a school hike. She separated from the group for a short time and has not been seen since. I looked at missing trail hikers quite extensively back in a 2021 article.

Birthdate: Mary Ann Mariz was born between April 15th, 1958, and April 14th, 1959 based on her reported age at the last date of reported contact. She might have been born on November 14th, 1958. Someone named "Mary A. Mariz" was born in San Bernardino County at that time according to a file at Ancestry that I found.
Hair: Brown, shoulder lengthed
Eyes: Brown
Scar: None known
Height/weight: 5-foot-6 and 120 to 125 pounds
BMI*: Mary Ann Mariz was in the normal range for BMI.
Tattoos: Mary Ann Mariz did not have any tattoos associated with her profiles.
Clothing and Accessories: This missing person was associated with a lot of clothing articles and/or possessions. Note the following with this case: a rust-colored jacket, blue jeans, a printed shirt, a silver watch, a birthstone ring with a pink stone, and a choker-type chain necklace.

Mary Ann Mariz has not been seen since April 14th, 1982 when she was 23 years old. This individual has now been missing for about 39 years as of the original publication date of this blog post.

This case is a fairly recent addition to NamUs, at the time of writing. It was added in December 2021, making for a nearly 40-year gap between Mary Ann's disappearance and the uploading into NamUs.

What stood out with this case during my research was that this person, at one time, appeared to have been identified as a deceased individual. On February 12th, 1985, The Auburn Journal apparently reported that her skeletal remains had been found. There is an age mismatch of one year between NamUs and the article, however, I really think this is the same case based on all the other details.

I wondered where the mistake was: was Mary Ann Mariz not actually the decadent mentioned in the article? Did they realize at a different time that they had made a mistake in identifying her? Or has she been found deceased and there was a clerical error that lead to her case being uploaded into NamUs?

I emailed the sheriff for this case and learned that Mary Ann Mariz is partly missing. They have not recovered all of her remains.To quote Deputy Sheriff Christine (Paige) Kneeland's email from December 27th, 2021:

"Yes, MARIZ is deceased, however, only partial remains were discovered. There is still a great deal of remains that have not been found, or might be DOE remains somewhere. So we have initiated a missing person protocol investigation due to the still outstanding amount of remains."

Details from NamUs**: "Her 1996 Toyota Tercel had been found abandoned in a parking area next to the Golden Gate bridge on or about the 30th of December, 2008. She had...lost her job and...had been selling her possessions and had ended a relationship. She had been living on her own for close to 6 years. She never asked for help...She has lived in...Sacramento area..Middletown, Pennsylvania. She spent most of her life in South Florida Tamarac. She was a graduate of Taravella High School."

Eyes: Hazel, possibly wearing colored contacts and would wear glasses
Scar: Scar under her left breast from a chest tube as an infant
Height/weight: 5'6" and 95 pounds
BMI*: In this case, the missing person was underweight by BMI at the time of the disappearance.
Tattoos: Crystal Ann Fox did not have any tattoos associated with her profiles. If you know that the missing person did have tattoos, then please post a remark at the end of this blog post on the matter.

Crystal Ann Fox, a missing person, was last heard from on December 11th, 2008 when she was 29 years old. Her vehicle was found on December 30th, 2008 but it's not clear if she was seen that day. I do see some posters for her stating that she was last seen on December 30th, 2008, however, I think that was simply the date that her vehicle was found. Of course, it could have been there for a number of days before that point.

The exact parking lot may have been the Alexander Avenue lot by Vista Point. That would place the vehicle on the north side of the Golden Gate Bridge.

This individual has now been missing for about 13 years as of the original publication date of this blog post. She had the following distinctive characteristics: 'Left eye and tongue-multiple ear piercings.'

The circumstances preceding and after her disappearance are as follows:

• She lost her job.
• She ended a relationship.
• She sold her possessions.
• Her car was found near a bridge.
• She has never been heard from since.

Given the vehicle's proximity to the Golden Gate Bridge, that bridge's reputation as a known hot-spot for suicide, and that she may have been despondent, the possibility of suicide cannot be discounted in my view. However, there are nature trails in that area as well.

There is a chance that she might be in the Jane Doe databases. If that is true, then her piercings may not identify her. Any bone injuries that this individual had or surgical implants (ie. a metal plate) may help with this case if anyone knows her medical history.
