Whistler and Pemberton, BC Mystery: Disappearance of Jonathan Jette and Rachael Bagnall

Missing Persons Report: Jonathan Jette and Rachael Bagnall

Case Overview

Jonathan Jette, age 34, and Rachael Bagnall, age 25, vanished on September 3rd, 2010 (Friday), while hiking in a mountainous region north of Pemberton, British Columbia, near Whistler. The couple, both experienced outdoor enthusiasts, were last seen preparing for a 2-3 day climb in the rugged backcountry of the Sea to Sky Corridor.

    • Canada's Missing Profile: Jonathan Jette and Rachael Bagnall

Circumstances of Disappearance

On September 3rd, 2010, Jette and Bagnall set out for a 2-3 day climb in the Pemberton area, north of Whistler, British Columbia. Specific details about their intended route are scarce, but the region is known for its dense forests, steep cliffs, and unpredictable weather, even in early September.

The couple did not return as expected, prompting friends to alert authorities. Their vehicle was located, but they left their cell phones behind, an unusual choice for experienced hikers. It has been suggested that this was possibly to disconnect or to avoid tracking. No distress signals were reported.

Search Efforts

A large-scale search was launched, involving Whistler Search and Rescue, RCMP, and volunteer teams. The operation covered remote trails, valleys, and forested areas in the Pemberton-Whistler corridor, lasting over a month. Despite extensive efforts, including aerial support, no trace of Jette or Bagnall was found—no clothing, equipment, or remains. The rugged terrain, dense vegetation, and wildlife likely obscured evidence, complicating the search.

Pique Newsmagazine article by Alison Taylor, published on September 1st, 2011, offered poignant details on Jette and Bagnall’s disappearance. The couple, described as soulmates, stopped at Tim Hortons in Squamish before parking at Spetch Creek Forest Service Road, aiming for Valentine Lake. Lacking a map, compass, or GPS, they relied on a scrambling guidebook. Over 2,000 search hours, including a 2011 family-led effort, found only nail clippers and a fire pit. Memorials honored Bagnall in Prince George and UBC, and Jette in Vancouver. Read more at Pique Newsmagazine.

Theories and Commentary

The disappearance of Jette and Bagnall has fueled speculation due to its alignment with other mysterious cases in the region. Several theories have emerged:

  1. Environmental Misadventure: The Pemberton area’s challenging landscape, with sudden drop-offs, fast-moving rivers, and dense forests, could have led to an accident.
  2. Foul Play: The decision to leave phones behind raises questions. Some, including researcher David Paulides, author of Missing 411, suggest this could indicate an intentional act to evade detection, though no evidence supports foul play.
  3. Lost or Disoriented: Despite their experience, the couple may have underestimated the terrain or become disoriented.
  4. Connection to the “BC Triangle”: BC's topography is contributor to the missing cases, in my opinion.

Community and Media Impact

The case garnered significant attention due to the couple’s active lifestyle and the absence of clues. Whistler and Pemberton communities rallied during the search, with local media covering the story extensively. The case remains a topic in true crime circles and is featured in David Paulides’ Missing 411 series. Paulides’ theories, like many on my blog, are speculative and not officially endorsed by authorities.

Current Status

As of July 2nd, 2025, Jonathan Jette and Rachael Bagnall remain missing. No new leads have surfaced, and the case is classified as unresolved by the Sea to Sky RCMP.

Commentary

I agree with most opinions regarding this case, that leaving the phones behind remains a large clue. I could think of a good reason why you might do that. Mainly, if you felt that space was entirely limited in your packing. However, phones are too small to be too burdensome and the costs-benefits of including them are worth it for hiking.

That the batteries would have died during a 2-3 day hike is not too relevant. Hikers often power off their phones to save for emergencies.

What stands out with this case is that they went missing as a couple. I profiled some missing hiker's and the risk factors a few years ago on this blog. The cases I looked at involved individuals hiking alone for the most part. In cases where people hiked in groups, the missing person often disappeared during a separation of some sort. But the other members of the group were the ones who reported the person missing (ie. they did not go missing themselves) and that's what makes a couple going missing on the same hike a bit odd.

It is, in fact, hard to accept two hikers going missing on the same hike as anything but very improbable. Usually, if one hiker suffers a mishap then the other goes for help. I don't how to calculate two hikers suffering separate mishaps on the same hike but it's improbable for sure. As for both hikers suffering a mishap that disappeared them simultaneously, of course that is possible and the imagination could run wild with scenarios.

On that matter, as food for thought, I will suggest that a bear with mange or one that is simply facing below-average body fat in the fall or late summer might attack two hikers. This has happened before, in fact, it happened in 2023 in Banff at about the same time of year.

Similar Case That Has Been Resolved: Banff Bear Attack, 2023

A CBC News article by Kylee Pedersen, published on October 1st, 2023, reported the deaths of a common-law couple and their dog in a grizzly bear attack in Banff National Park, Alberta, on September 29th, 2023. The experienced backcountry hikers, camping in the Red Deer River Valley, sent a 5 p.m. check-in message before a GPS alert signaled the attack at 8 p.m.

Harsh weather delayed responders, who found the couple deceased and euthanized the aggressive bear. The case details did note that the bear had below normal body fat, suggesting that a bear facing hunger in the fall might be more likely to attack people than bears that found their normal food sources.

Getting back to the case of Jette and Bagnall, bears around Pemberton go into hyperphagia in late August or September. This is when they are storing body fat for hibernation.

Similar Case That Has Been Resolved: José and Stephanie Perez

A Metro News article, published on May 9th, 2025, details the disappearance of José Luis Perez, 64, and Stephanie Elizabeth Perez, 65. This is an interesting case, in my opinion, as it is about people who vanished in July 2024 while hiking near Sunrise and Autumn Trails in Thousand Oaks, California.

Reported missing after Stephanie failed to log in for work, their belongings, including their phones, were left at home. A hiker found their skeletal remains in May 2025, revealing gunshot wounds—José’s death ruled a suicide, Stephanie’s a homicide. The case remains under investigation. Read more at Metro News.

This case is similar for the phones being left behind. Furthermore, the missing Californians were not immediately found. Whether the reason for the disappearance (ie. murder-suicide), will be the same for Jette and Bagnall is a matter for debating and resolution.

Nola Fujitani -- Missing Since June 18th, 1992 from Honolulu, Hawaii

Missing Person: Nola Fujitani (NamUs #MP127540)

July 25th, 1992. Honolulu Star-Bulletin.

Details from a government source (might be paraphrased)

Nola was last seen dropping her son off at her parent's residence on University Avenue on 6-18-1992, at about 1600 hours. On 6-19-1992, at about 0200 hours, Nola's vehicle was located in the parking lot of the Halona Blow Hole. On 6-19-1992, Nola's parents received a suicide-type letter in the afternoon mail in Nola's handwriting. On 6-21-1992, Nola's sandals were found in a cave at the same location, and the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) conducted a search of the area. Nola was declared deceased in June of 1997.

Last contact: June 18th, 1992 at 4PM
Last seen location: Parent's residence on University Avenue in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Age when Nola Fujitani disappeared: 38
Sex: Female
Height in inches: 64
Weight in pounds (lbs): 150-180; NamUs said she was 180 pounds but journalism said she was 150 pounds. The differences are significant for body type by BMI.
Ethnicity: Asian
Hair color: Black
Eye Color: Brown
Scar or distinctive characteristic: None.
Clothing: reportedly turquoise blouse and beige shorts.
Vehicle: 1988 Honda Prelude (CRW 621)
  • Her shoes were found inside her car.
  • Also, a suicide note was found inside the car. My interpretation was that this was additional to the suicide letter that her parents received.
1988 Honda Prelude
Not her actual vehicle. Nola's vehicle may have been a different color and had Hawaiian plates. But this is what a 1988 Honda Prelude looked like.

BMI means body mass index. It is meant to describe someone's healthy body weight relative to their height. It is food for thought as to how someone may have looked. However, it is meant as a guide only and does not account for all body types.

Nola Fujitani had a BMI of 30.89 if you go by NamUs and their data for her weight. This would make Nola Fujitani obese by BMI standards at the time of her disappearance. However, if you use 150 pounds (her reported weight in journalism) she would have been 25.74 for BMI and in the overweight category.

Commentary and Research

By: Shane Lambert

Has Nola Fujitani been found?

July 25th, 1992. Honolulu Star-Advertiser.

Nola Fujitani has not been found. This is a missing person's case where there is some insight as to what may have happened to her. The "suicide type letter" would suggest self harm. Furthermore, it was reported that she threatened suicide in the time frame before her disappearance. Lastly, there were reports that a suicide note was found in her car. Nonetheless, I did wonder after researching this case if she might have voluntarily disappeared herself and ran off.

Her husband was the one who reported her missing, according to journalism in the weeks after she disappeared. He reported her missing at 2AM on June 19th, 1992, according to the Honolulu Star Bulletin. Here are some bullet points of interest for this missing person's case.
  • The Halona Blow Hole is at 21.282165894752787, -157.6767576345056 for Google Maps. Searches feared that she might have jumped from the seaside cliffs at this area.
  • She was a teacher at a school where another teacher, Carl Akio Asaeda (b. September 13th, 1948), had gone missing just shortly before she disappeared.
  • The disappearance of the two teachers appeared together in journalism.
July 14th, 1992. Honolulu Star-Bulletin.
  • In some journalism, it is stated that she left home the night of her disappearance "after threatening suicide".
June 27th, 1992. Honolulu Star-Bulletin.
  • Carl Akio Asaeda does not have a NamUs profile at the time of writing. Sometimes cases like this are in the backlog of cases to be entered. He was described as a missing person in a classified advertisement in the legal notices section of the May 15, 2006 Honolulu Star Advertiser. Also, similar classifieds appeared in 2009. I do not know if Carl Akio Asaeda is a missing person, at the time of writing.

I think with this case, there is a question as to whether the two cases are connected. Is it just a coincidence that two teachers at the same school disappeared within 3-4 days of one another, not to turn up again in all the years that have since past? I did find this missing person case a little odd because two people that worked together disappeared so quickly and neither's body was found. Furthermore, Captain Louis Souza's comment stuck with me. As presented in the article snipped above, it's not clear whether the Captain was talking about Asaeda, Fujitani, or both.

I decided to look at Carl Akio Asaeda under the assumption that any information on his fate might pertain to Nola Fujitani. I found that his name appeared in some of those websites that offer to provide information on people.

Have a look at the following snippet from https://www.fastbackgroundcheck.com which I took on January 11th, 2025.

Importantly, the middle address of 98-1449 Hoohonua Street does match the address of the same Carl Akio Asaeda who went missing in Honolulu. If this profile is, in fact, for only one person (ie. it's not erroneously combining two different people with the same name) then it suggests that Carl Akio Asaeda resided in Washington and Oregon after disappearing in 1992. That is the potential importance of the clipping above.

Meanwhile, the clippings below, which pertain to the missing person's case, show the address matches to the website snipping above.

June 16th, 1992. Honolulu Star-Advertiser.

I do NOT fully trust websites that offer background information on people. I think that these kinds of websites can combine profiles of people with the same name. But the birthdate of September 1948 in the website snipping above would be about right for the Carl Akio Asaeda that went missing in 1992, as he was 43 in June 1992. I think it's an interesting lead but solid documentary evidence (ie. signature matches) would be better.

From my research, it's clear the Carl Akio Asaeda, Nola Fujitani's coworker, was a missing person in 2006. Whether he remains one, isn't clear but I found nothing to suggest the mystery of his disappearance was resolved.

Of course, if the missing person's cases of the two disappeared teachers from the same school are connected, then any lead on Carl Asaeda's whereabouts might be a lead on Nola Fujitani's whereabouts or fate. I would say that there is work to be done on this case to validate the website information. I hope it's a lead as opposed to a red herring.

On that matter, there are a lot of hits on the name, some of which report a similar birthdate. I do plan to email the police contact regarding this and may post an update.

Ethnicity: Caucasian
Sex: Female

Birthdate: Crystal Ann Fox was born between December 31st, 1978, and December 30th, 1979 based on her reported age at the last date of reported contact.
Hair: Blond/strawberry, short but long on one side; she would frequently dye her hair

Tattoos: Crystal Ann Fox did not have any tattoos associated with her profiles. If you know that the missing person did have tattoos, then please post a remark at the end of this blog post on the matter.

Crystal Ann Fox, a missing person, was last heard from on December 11th, 2008 when she was 29 years old. Her vehicle was found on December 30th, 2008 but it's not clear if she was seen that day. I do see some posters for her stating that she was last seen on December 30th, 2008, however, I think that was simply the date that her vehicle was found. Of course, it could have been there for a number of days before that point.

The exact parking lot may have been the Alexander Avenue lot by Vista Point. That would place the vehicle on the north side of the Golden Gate Bridge.

This individual has now been missing for about 13 years as of the original publication date of this blog post. She had the following distinctive characteristics: 'Left eye and tongue-multiple ear piercings.'

The circumstances preceding and after her disappearance are as follows:
  • She lost her job.
  • She ended a relationship.
  • She sold her possessions.
  • Her car was found near a bridge.
  • She has never been heard from since.
Given the vehicle's proximity to the Golden Gate Bridge, that bridge's reputation as a known hot-spot for suicide, and that she may have been despondent, the possibility of suicide cannot be discounted in my view. However, there are nature trails in that area as well.

There is a chance that she might be in the Jane Doe databases. If that is true, then her piercings may not identify her. Any bone injuries that this individual had or surgical implants (ie. a metal plate) may help with this case if anyone knows her medical history.
