Whistler and Pemberton, BC Mystery: Disappearance of Jonathan Jette and Rachael Bagnall

Missing Persons Report: Jonathan Jette and Rachael Bagnall

Case Overview

Jonathan Jette, age 34, and Rachael Bagnall, age 25, vanished on September 3rd, 2010 (Friday), while hiking in a mountainous region north of Pemberton, British Columbia, near Whistler. The couple, both experienced outdoor enthusiasts, were last seen preparing for a 2-3 day climb in the rugged backcountry of the Sea to Sky Corridor.

Personal Details

  • Jonathan Jette
    • Age at Disappearance: 34
    • Physical Description: Approximately 5’8”, slender build, 154 lbs, brown hair (receding), and hazel eyes. Likely dressed in outdoor gear suitable for hiking, including a backpack and sturdy boots.
    • Background: Described as an avid hiker with knowledge of the local terrain, Jette was familiar with Whistler and Pemberton’s trails.
    • Canada's Missing Profile: Jonathan Jette and Rachael Bagnall
  • Rachael Bagnall
    • Age at Disappearance: 25
    • Physical Description: Approximately 5’6”, medium build, 146 lbs, blonde curly shoulder-length hair, and blue eyes. Likely wearing hiking attire, possibly including a jacket and outdoor pants.
    • Background: Bagnall was also an experienced hiker, often exploring the backcountry with Jette. The couple shared a passion for outdoor adventures.
    • Canada's Missing Profile: Jonathan Jette and Rachael Bagnall

Circumstances of Disappearance

On September 3rd, 2010, Jette and Bagnall set out for a 2-3 day climb in the Pemberton area, north of Whistler, British Columbia. Specific details about their intended route are scarce, but the region is known for its dense forests, steep cliffs, and unpredictable weather, even in early September.

The couple did not return as expected, prompting friends to alert authorities. Their vehicle was located, but they left their cell phones behind, an unusual choice for experienced hikers. It has been suggested that this was possibly to disconnect or to avoid tracking. No distress signals were reported.

Search Efforts

A large-scale search was launched, involving Whistler Search and Rescue, RCMP, and volunteer teams. The operation covered remote trails, valleys, and forested areas in the Pemberton-Whistler corridor, lasting over a month. Despite extensive efforts, including aerial support, no trace of Jette or Bagnall was found—no clothing, equipment, or remains. The rugged terrain, dense vegetation, and wildlife likely obscured evidence, complicating the search.

Pique Newsmagazine article by Alison Taylor, published on September 1st, 2011, offered poignant details on Jette and Bagnall’s disappearance. The couple, described as soulmates, stopped at Tim Hortons in Squamish before parking at Spetch Creek Forest Service Road, aiming for Valentine Lake. Lacking a map, compass, or GPS, they relied on a scrambling guidebook. Over 2,000 search hours, including a 2011 family-led effort, found only nail clippers and a fire pit. Memorials honored Bagnall in Prince George and UBC, and Jette in Vancouver. Read more at Pique Newsmagazine.

Theories and Commentary

The disappearance of Jette and Bagnall has fueled speculation due to its alignment with other mysterious cases in the region. Several theories have emerged:

  1. Environmental Misadventure: The Pemberton area’s challenging landscape, with sudden drop-offs, fast-moving rivers, and dense forests, could have led to an accident.
  2. Foul Play: The decision to leave phones behind raises questions. Some, including researcher David Paulides, author of Missing 411, suggest this could indicate an intentional act to evade detection, though no evidence supports foul play.
  3. Lost or Disoriented: Despite their experience, the couple may have underestimated the terrain or become disoriented.
  4. Connection to the “BC Triangle”: BC's topography is contributor to the missing cases, in my opinion.

Community and Media Impact

The case garnered significant attention due to the couple’s active lifestyle and the absence of clues. Whistler and Pemberton communities rallied during the search, with local media covering the story extensively. The case remains a topic in true crime circles and is featured in David Paulides’ Missing 411 series. Paulides’ theories, like many on my blog, are speculative and not officially endorsed by authorities.

Current Status

As of July 2nd, 2025, Jonathan Jette and Rachael Bagnall remain missing. No new leads have surfaced, and the case is classified as unresolved by the Sea to Sky RCMP.

Commentary

I agree with most opinions regarding this case, that leaving the phones behind remains a large clue. I could think of a good reason why you might do that. Mainly, if you felt that space was entirely limited in your packing. However, phones are too small to be too burdensome and the costs-benefits of including them are worth it for hiking.

That the batteries would have died during a 2-3 day hike is not too relevant. Hikers often power off their phones to save for emergencies.

What stands out with this case is that they went missing as a couple. I profiled some missing hiker's and the risk factors a few years ago on this blog. The cases I looked at involved individuals hiking alone for the most part. In cases where people hiked in groups, the missing person often disappeared during a separation of some sort. But the other members of the group were the ones who reported the person missing (ie. they did not go missing themselves) and that's what makes a couple going missing on the same hike a bit odd.

It is, in fact, hard to accept two hikers going missing on the same hike as anything but very improbable. Usually, if one hiker suffers a mishap then the other goes for help. I don't how to calculate two hikers suffering separate mishaps on the same hike but it's improbable for sure. As for both hikers suffering a mishap that disappeared them simultaneously, of course that is possible and the imagination could run wild with scenarios.

On that matter, as food for thought, I will suggest that a bear with mange or one that is simply facing below-average body fat in the fall or late summer might attack two hikers. This has happened before, in fact, it happened in 2023 in Banff at about the same time of year.

Similar Case That Has Been Resolved: Banff Bear Attack, 2023

A CBC News article by Kylee Pedersen, published on October 1st, 2023, reported the deaths of a common-law couple and their dog in a grizzly bear attack in Banff National Park, Alberta, on September 29th, 2023. The experienced backcountry hikers, camping in the Red Deer River Valley, sent a 5 p.m. check-in message before a GPS alert signaled the attack at 8 p.m.

Harsh weather delayed responders, who found the couple deceased and euthanized the aggressive bear. The case details did note that the bear had below normal body fat, suggesting that a bear facing hunger in the fall might be more likely to attack people than bears that found their normal food sources.

Getting back to the case of Jette and Bagnall, bears around Pemberton go into hyperphagia in late August or September. This is when they are storing body fat for hibernation.

Similar Case That Has Been Resolved: José and Stephanie Perez

A Metro News article, published on May 9th, 2025, details the disappearance of José Luis Perez, 64, and Stephanie Elizabeth Perez, 65. This is an interesting case, in my opinion, as it is about people who vanished in July 2024 while hiking near Sunrise and Autumn Trails in Thousand Oaks, California.

Reported missing after Stephanie failed to log in for work, their belongings, including their phones, were left at home. A hiker found their skeletal remains in May 2025, revealing gunshot wounds—José’s death ruled a suicide, Stephanie’s a homicide. The case remains under investigation. Read more at Metro News.

This case is similar for the phones being left behind. Furthermore, the missing Californians were not immediately found. Whether the reason for the disappearance (ie. murder-suicide), will be the same for Jette and Bagnall is a matter for debating and resolution.

Commentary and Research

By: Shane Lambert
Original time of writing: February 11th, 2025

At the original time of writing, full research on this case is pending. However, I wanted to get some bullet points onto the website regarding this case. I found some useful information on the Websleuths page for this missing person (her page is hyperlinked above).

The Websleuths page itself hyperlinks back to Canada's Missing, the RCMP's website for Canada's missing people. However, it's not clear where the Websleuths user got the info (web pages change all the time). It did state the following pointers:
  • She lived at 90 Shuter Street.
  • The MP said she was going to Moss Park with her boyfriend, someone named Lenny.
  • They were going to meet someone named Bob Russo.
  • Gloria Abotossaway took her birth certificate and a status card with her (a status card is a card that some Indigenous people in Canada have; it is government identification that pertains to The Indian Act); She was a member of the Aundeck Omni Kaning First Nations, otherwise known as Sucker Creek First Nations in Little Current, Manitoulin Island.
  • The missing person had previous disappearances that were presumptively voluntary and short-term.
  • There was a murder in her apartment the night she disappeared. The victim was David Marlatt.
  • There was a statement saying that Gloria was not considered to be involved in anything suspicious, despite the murder of someone in her apartment.
Her address at 90 Shuter Street is visible in Google Maps going back to September 2007. You can visit this page to see the building and what it looked like at that time.

It's said she was going to Moss Park, which would be a very short walk from her address. This was known as a rough area in 1992, with drug transactions and dangerous people.

She did go missing on Valentine's Day and the MP was with her boyfriend. This wasn't someone that anyone in her circles knew well as he has not been identified (only as "Lenny").

Can't Look Further Than The Murder in Her Apartment

I think the elephant in the room with this case was that there was a murder in her apartment the night of her disappearance. She clearly wasn't having a standard day.

I think anyone thinking about this case should wonder what it means exactly to go missing on the same day that there is a murder in your apartment of another individual, a murder that the police did not think you committed.

The murdered man was named David Marlatt. I did some research, I think I found the murderer, but I don't want to name him in print. I do feel safe in saying that Gloria Jean Abotossaway kept some dangerous associations.

Did she see too much? More research is necessary on this case.

My inclination is that someone had a motive to disappear her. However, the kind of person who has a murder take place in their apartment is someone more likely to have dangerous associations.

Furthermore, in news sources, it is stated that she has not filed taxes since at least the year 2000. If she filed in that year, then it would mean she survived her disappearance date by several years.

Are we dealing with two dates in this case? One in 1992 and then another around 2000? Tax returns were signed back then, so would that be proof she survived the timeframe after the murder in her apartment?

Yet, her family has not seen her since the night of the murder in 1992. She is missing from them in that sense, but it seems like she has a paper trail extending to the year 2000.

The last thing I want to say at this time is that "Lenny" and "Bob Russo," whoever they are, could have many name variations. Lenny could be all of Leo, Leonard, Leonardo, and perhaps more. Meanwhile, Bob could be Bobby, Robert, Rob, Robbie, Robby, and perhaps more as well. Anyone researching this case should be aware of all the different spellings.

I also wondered if Russo was the spelling of the name or just how it sounded. If it is just the way the name sounded, then it brings "Rousseau" into play.

Lee Selwyn Murder - What Happened After the Unsolved Mysteries Episode?

By: Shane Lambert
Original time of writing: July 15th, 2024

Episode 13 of Season 1 of the hit TV show Unsolved Mysteries from the 1980s and 1990s featured a lead story about the murder of Lee Selwyn, a man who was a disc jockey in the LA area. The show originally aired on January 15th, 1989 with Robert Stack as the host.

As depicted in the episode, Selwyn was out riding his motorcycle as part of a quartet of friends. One of the friends confronted a dangerous driver in a truck and an altercation ensued. When one of Selwyn's friends damaged the driver's truck, he, the driver, responded by attempting to run down the motorcyclists. The driver ran Selwyn off the road at high speed, leading to his loss of life when he hit a phone pole. If you are wondering what happened after the 1989 episode that featured this murder, then this article is for you.

Lee Selwyn's photo from his Findagrave memorial page.

Update in 1993: Prisoner Named as a Suspect

Selwyn was 26 years old when the murder took place on October 8th, 1988. There was an update in 1993. An inmate in the Georgia prison system was identified as a suspect in the murder. His name was Franklin Legrand (or LeGrand) Perkins, a man who was 36 years old in 1993. The clipped article below comes from the LA Times on July 30th, 1993.

This led to the conviction of Perkins according to a December 11th, 1994 article in the LA Times.

Selwyn's memorial page at Findagrave contains the following statements: "In March of 1993, Lee's case was re-aired; as a result, an anonymous tipster contacted the telecenter. She identified Lee's killer as Franklin Legrand Perkins. The tipster had remembered a story her ex-boyfriend had told her of Perkins boasting about how he killed a biker in Los Angeles. Lee's friends were shown a photo line-up and identified Perkins as the assailant. He was arrested in Moultrie, Georgia on July 30, just a few days before he was scheduled to be paroled from prison. At the time, he was serving a five-year sentence for possession of a firearm by a felon. He was returned to Los Angeles to face charges. He was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison."

The newspaper clipping says he was convicted of second-degree murder. Second-degree murder is the kind that comes without planning and would seem to fit the situation as depicted in the episode.

Doreen Pickard's Murder, Susan Laferte's Assault - What Happened After the "Unsolved Mysteries" Episode

By: Shane Lambert

On May 18th, 1988, "Unsolved Mysteries" aired an original episode. One of the mysteries ("Rhode Island Amnesia") included the murder of Doreen Picard and the assault of Susan Laferte. Laferte, as a surviving witness to the murder, unfortunately, went into a coma from her injuries and could not remember the attack when she came out of it.

03 Apr 1998, Fri The News Journal (Wilmington, Delaware) Newspapers.com

More modern versions of the "Unsolved Mysteries" episode indicate that one Raymond Tempest was convicted of the crimes, was sentenced to 85 years in prison, but has since been released. Naturally, that should raise some questions for fans of the television series: why was he convicted, and if his sentence was for so many decades, how is it that he could be released already?

The episode was the 7th "Special Edition" of "Unsolved Mysteries." This was a time period in the show's history when they appeared to be feeling out the ratings. The following preview of the show appeared in the News-Press out of Fort Myers, Florida on May 18th, 1988.

18 May 1988, Wed News-Press (Fort Myers, Florida) Newspapers.com
With the newspaper databases I used, Raymond Tempest's name starts to enter journalism related to the crime in June of 1991. The following article is the earliest journalism I found that associated Raymond Tempest with the case.

09 Jun 1991, Sun The Berkshire Eagle (Pittsfield, Massachusetts) Newspapers.com

Later journalism suggested that Raymond Tempest benefited from having family ties involved in law enforcement in the community that Picard was murdered in:

21 Apr 1992, Tue Record-Journal (Meriden, Connecticut) Newspapers.com

The conviction came in what would have been late June of 1992.

05 Jul 1992, Sun The Boston Globe (Boston, Massachusetts) Newspapers.com

The conviction was vacated in July of 2015:

14 Jul 2015, Tue The Boston Globe (Boston, Massachusetts) Newspapers.com

After the vacation of the conviction in July 2015, I did not find any more newspaper coverage. However, there are online news articles as this saga appears to be ongoing even in very modern times.

May Millete Case Update: Larry Millete’s Court Hearing on February 27, 2025, Addresses Protective Order in Missing Mother’s Case
May "Maya" Millete, a mother of three, disappeared from her Chula Vista, California home on January 7, 2021. On February 27, 2025, ABC 10News San Diego reported that her husband, Larry Millete, appeared in court for a hearing to modify a criminal protective order related to their children, as he awaits trial for her murder. Arrested on October 19, 2021, Larry has pleaded not guilty, despite prosecutors alleging he killed Maya amid marital strife. The hearing highlighted ongoing family tensions, with Maya’s sister, Maricris Drouaillet, opposing contact between Larry and the children. As of March 9, 2025, Maya’s body remains missing, and the trial is scheduled for July 7, 2025.

May Millete Case Update: Husband’s Arrest on October 19, 2021, Intensifies Search for Missing California Mother
May "Maya" Millete, a mother of three, was last seen at her Chula Vista, California home on January 7th, 2021.
On October 19th, 2021, ABC10 News San Diego reported that her husband, Larry Millete, was arrested and charged with her murder, though her body has not been located.
The arrest followed 67 search warrants and 87 interviews, with prosecutors alleging foul play linked to marital issues, including Maya’s intent to divorce.
A January 7th, 2023, San Diego Union-Tribune update noted the case was moving to trial, while X posts from
@ChulaVistaPD
in 2024, confirmed ongoing searches. As of March 9, 2025, Maya remains missing, and the trial, scheduled for July 7, 2025, is still pending.

May Millete has not been seen since January 7th, 2021, when she was 39 years old.

One recent news source that covered her disappearance was Fox5 in San Diego. According to a February 6th article by Jeff McAdam, Maya's disappearance was going to be investigated by a noted Private Investigator.

The details of her disappearance according to that news site are as follows:
Her husband told FOX 5...that he thought she might have gone for a hike to blow off some steam, but she never came home. Her car was still in the driveway, phone turned off and credit cards unused. When she didn’t show up for her daughter’s birthday party a few days later, her family called police.
Hiking alone is certainly a risk factor when it comes to a disappearance. There are plenty of missing people who were last thought to be going hiking alone.

Paula Jean Welden's lengthy disappearance spanning decades is probably the most famous case of that's covered at this site. Also, at the time of her disappearance, the husband's statement suggests that she was in an angered state of mind. However, the notion that she walked away from her life has largely been dismissed since the early days of her disappearance.

This missing person did not have any articles or items associated with her in the missing person's reports that I consulted. However, NamUs did note some tattoos:
  • musical notes right chest/shoulder
  • hummingbird on back
  • symbol on inner wrist
If you know where this person might be or have any information on this case, then please contact the authorities. In Canada, look for Canada's Missing website with the Federal government. In the USA, you can look for the NamUs profile. Conversely, you can post a remark to this article.

Forensic Files Series Premiere - Helle Crafts, Richard Crafts, and Lie-Detector Skepticism

Author: Shane Lambert

Helle Crafts was a flight attendant who went missing on November 8th, 1986. She was a flight attendant who was last seen by other flight attendants at about 6pm that evening.

Her case is interesting for a couple reasons: firstly, her disappearance and murder were covered in the very first episode of the series Forensic Files (originally aired on April 23rd, 1996). Secondly, the conviction of Richard Crafts, Helle's husband, was the first conviction without a body in the state of Connecticut.

The case is also interesting for those that remain skeptical of using so-called "lie detectors" to try and establish the innocence or guilt of an individual. Richard Craft was convicted of murdering Helle Crafts, however, prior to the conviction, he had passed a lie-detector test.

The more formal name of a lie-detector test is a polygraph examination. This was a subject that was covered in a course I took on Private Investigation with ICS Canada (Online Private Investigator Training Course). The course material used the following definition:

"A polygraph examination is a scientific method to aid in determining deception or truthfulness by obtaining recordings of physiological phenomena such as changes in blood pressure, pulse, and respiration (breathing)."

The recreation of the polygraph examination in the Forensic Files episode appears to be true to what I learned in the course. The only people that are meant to be in a room during a polygraph examination are the subject and the polygraph examiner.

I have watched other forensic television shows where several police officers are present during a polygraph examination. These should be scoffed at as they do not accurately depict the professional standard of a polygraph examination.

In the case of Richard Craft, he was able to beat the polygraph examination. That is, he was able to tell lies that the polygraph examiner was not able to detect. There are many possible explanations for this and they include the polygraph examiner's errored analysis of the data that he/she received. Furthermore, there are known countermeasures to a polygraph test but these may involve using drugs that would create behaviors that are easy to spot.

Machines are objective in spitting out their results but people reading the data that machines produce is another matter. Furthermore, machines need to be collaborated and this can be done wrong by the human in charge of it. If you understand that human error can cause problems with polygraph tests, then you can understand why the results should only be food for thought as opposed to something that's 100% accurate.

Clearly, forensic evidence is far more valuable than the results of polygraph examinations. In the case of Richard Crafts, forensic evidence was given more weight than his polygraph examination.

While Helle Crafts' body was never found one of her teeth was conclusively found. This tooth was scattered amidst other remains that were identified as human and of the same blood type as Helle. In the same area of these remains, a chain saw had been discarded and this item was linked to Richard Crafts through documents. Additionally, a woodchipper was seen to have been operating in the area where Helle's remains were found. Lastly, Helle's disappearance happened in the context of marital problems with Richard Crafts.

Wed, Jan 14, 1987 – 17 · Hartford Courant (Hartford, Connecticut) · Newspapers.com

The first episode of Forensic Files is definitely one that students of forensics should pay attention to. It contains several pointers that can be used as food for thought in other cases. I will make my points on the episode as noted below:

  1. Richard and Helle Crafts were in a crumbling marriage that included infidelity, lies, the husband not spending time at home, and a hired Private Investigator; that latter circumstance reveals crumbling trust while the other circumstances have to be considered risk factors that might precede the disappearance of a spouse.
  2. The forensic study of human blood is known as serology; in this episode, there is an interesting detail about serology that is discussed during Dr. Henry Lee's interview; at the 7:50 mark of the Youtube video below it's revealed that forensic medicine (the study of the human body for forensics) can reveal whether blood is from circulation blood or menstrual blood; of course, if blood in a crime-scene room is the latter then it might be held to mean that its presence is not indicative of a criminal act whereas the former increases suspicion of such; this is something that students of forensics should be aware of.
  3. Another pointer to take away from the episode is that filed-off serial numbers are not necessarily gone for all-time; I've seen this in other forensic shows as well where car serial-numbers can be found; there is a process to find the serial number beneath the filed-off numbers and the forensic scientists employed in Helle Crafts' case were able to identify the chainsaw's serial number despite the fact that he had been filed off.

The episode is certainly recommendable. The year of Helle's disappearance, 1986, was a time when DNA was in its infancy when it came to criminal cases. They talk about blood type more than DNA in the episode.

The one skeptical remark I have about the case has to do with the statement that Richard Crafts was convicted even without finding Helle Crafts' body.  They did find her tooth amidst body parts that were human, like bits of a skull. It's not like they don't have a trace of her remains and a convincing reason to believe that she was dead.

This is a WORK IN PROGRESS for the timeline of Robert Charles Browne, a self-professed serial killer. Although he stated that he killed 49 people, I stuck to the crimes that are conventionally associated with him when constructing his timeline. Note, that many of the murders that he is mentioned in conjunction with are NOT convictions. However, I decided to include them as food for thought as there are those that are familiar with his life that think he should be considered a suspect in many murders.

If there a date and location that you think should be included, feel free to mention it in the comments. I'll have a look.

Ted Bundy, the 1969 Memorial Day Weekend Murders, and the Composite Sketch of Suspect

Author: Shane Lambert
The original time of publication: January 7th, 2021

Susan Margarite Davis and Elizabeth Perry, both 19 years of age as of the Memorial Day Weekend in 1969, were murdered on May 30th of that year outside Somers Point, New Jersey. The area they were found in was about 100 kilometers from Philadelphia. At the time of their murders, Ted Bundy was a student at Temple University and he has been considered a suspect in the case for several years now.

Bundy was not consistent when he told stories of his first crimes. However, apparently, he told Art Norman, a forensic psychologist, that his (Bundy's) first murders were of two women in the Philadelphia area. This admission was in a roundabout way: Bundy appeared to be talking about himself in the third person.

The case against Bundy in these two murders is not rock solid. But Richard Larsen, a Bundy biographer, is one prominent individual who knows a lot about the life and times of Bundy that has expressed belief in Bundy being the Memorial Day Weekend 1969 murderer.

One point pertaining to these murders that has not gotten enough attention in my view is that there was a composite sketch of a young man that was wanted for questioning in the murders of Davis and Perry. In my opinion, Bundy, who would have been 22 at the time of the murders, resembles the composite sketch.

Ted Bundy's photo from the 1965
yearbook for Woodrow Wilson High School.

There is about a four-year gap between the composite sketch and the photo above. Bundy is definitely in the ballpark of resemblance, in my view. The sketch was taken from the description of two witnesses who claimed that they saw the suspect near the victims' car.
