Last contact time: March 27th, 1985, at 7:20PM, according to NamUs. But there is a report that says she was seen almost an hour after that, making her last-seen time at about 8:20PM on March 27th, 1985 (Wednesday).
 

Last location: According to NamUs, her last location was Colonie, New York, supposedly leaving a store called The Tanning Hut. But more correctly, there was a government source that said that three separate individuals saw her that night, and the sightings are considered credible. According to an eyewitness account, Karen's last sighting would be at the northwest corner of Fuller Road and Washington Avenue in Albany, New York, at approximately 8:20 PM on March 27, 1985.

Note: Colonie and Albany are adjacent. Karen's route after she left the tanning salon crossed a city/town border.

Karen Wilson, Missing Person Case: Last Known Clothing and Accessories Details

When Karen Louise Wilson was last seen, she was wearing faded Levi blue jeans, a light blue short-sleeve pullover Izod shirt, and a 3/4 length cream-colored women's raincoat. Her footwear consisted of sneakers, and she may have been wearing glasses.

Amateur investigators looking through online Jane Doe databases could look for a reported Jane Doe associated with a raincoat and then compare case details of the Jane Doe to Karen's case.

Her accessories included a size 5 1/2 14K gold ring with a blue stone (possibly zircon), a Seiko watch with a black face, plastic earrings, and a two-strand yellow and white necklace. Karen carried a gray cloth pocketbook containing a blue nylon wallet with Velcro, a white and green plastic bag from "Ups N Downs", and a blue knapsack holding a yellow dress.

Has Karen Louise Wilson been found?

Karen Louise Wilson remains missing. She was last seen in 1985 after leaving a business that I presume is a tanning salon, based mainly on the name. Based on her 7:20PM departure time from the tanning salon, she would have been walking after dusk for her location and time of year. Those picturing her walking should factor in a post-sunset setting as it was just the early spring and starting to get fairly late into the evening.

The authorities do have a composite sketch of an individual who has been associated with the case. At NamUs, he is described as someone who was in the area. Presumably, the authorities had a good reason to associate his likeness with the case.

What stood out to me with this mystery is the chance that Karen, the missing person, attracted a stalker on the night that she disappeared. She was at a tanning salon; she had a healthy BMI; I think a lot of men would describe her as attractive based on her photos. Furthermore, she was in her early 20s.

Karen's last known location wasn't really The Tanning Hut, as described at NamUs. Another government source has a PDF file online that details three eyewitness accounts of Karen's movements well after she left The Tanning Salon. 

This appears to be a mystery where there was significant police work done to reconstruct the events the night she disappeared. In this publication, I will construct a scenario that I think might have happened that reconciles with the three witness statements.

Karen Wilson Disappearance: Eyewitness Accounts from March 27, 1985

I am going to take a look at a public report from the New York troopers on this mystery. The following are the people whom I identify in the document, with some consideration for duplicate sightings of the same person described differently across different witness statements.

Karen Wilson Case: Key Witnesses and Suspect Descriptions from 1985

Here’s a list of all individuals mentioned in the PDF file from Trooper.ny.gov concerning Karen's last known movements on the night she disappeared. Except for Karen, I use my own nicknames for the people who appear in the witness statements. These nicknames are meant to describe who they are in the setting.

1. Karen Wilson, the missing person
2. Witness 1
3. Male Driver (As described by Witness 1)
4. Witness 2 
5. Smaller Person (As described by Witness 2)
6. Following Male (As described by Witness 2)
7. Witness 3
8. Jaywalking Male (As described by Witness 3)

The witnesses are all different people. Furthermore, the witnesses see Karen at different times and in different locations along her walking route, which was in a southern direction on Fuller Road.

With the witness statements to follow, readers should keep in mind that I think the Male Driver that Witness 1 saw was the Following Male that Witness 2 saw. I also think the Following Male that Witness 2 saw is the Jaywalking Male that Witness 3 saw. This is only my opinion, but I can state that the statements I made are after careful review. If correct, then Male Driver, Following Male, and Jaywalking Male are all the same person but described differe.

There are three vehicles that are referred to in the witness statements: Vehicle 1, Vehicle 2, and Vehicle 3. Vehicle 1 is not described but is in the scene Witness 1 describes. Male Driver is the operator. Vehicle is a black sedan with a bullet hole in it, which Witness 2 describes. Vehicle 3 is a lime-green Volkswagen Rabbit vehicle that Witness 3 describes.

When constructing a scenario which I think might be plausible, I challenged myself to include all the elements that the witnesses described. So that meant explaining everyone's presence and explaining the vehicles in relation to my scenario. I did this under the assumption that the witnesses included information that, perhaps only instinctually, they felt was relevant. From that point of view, the vehicles must be explained and cannot be dismissed as arbitrary elements.

Karen Louise Wilson Disappearance: Witnesses, Suspects, and Timeline (March 27th, 1985)

Karen Louise Wilson, a 22-year-old SUNY Albany senior, was seen leaving The Tanning Hut at 1670 Central Ave, Colonie, NY (Google Maps: 42.723098, -73.840189) at 7:20 PM on March 27th, 1985. She then walked south into Albany, New York. Below is an account of key witnesses who are thought to have:

1. seen Karen;
2. observed individuals near her,
3. observed other important details;
4. and provide insight into her direction of travel.

Witness #1 (Female), Sighted Karen at about 8:15 PM Quote from original source:

"1) In the first sighting at 8:15PM, Witness #1 was traveling southbound on Fuller Rd after she turned from Central Ave. She stated that as she approached a gas station on her left, she passed a very slow moving vehicle, also traveling southbound (gas station is believed to be the Workingman's Friend Gas Station). She could not recall any specifics of the vehicle's description, except that the operator was a white male in his forties with an intent look on his face. The male had a beard, brown hair with a reddish tint, and a long nose and face. Witness #1 then saw a female believed to be Karen, walking near a guide rail along the west side of Fuller Road near Sysco Food. By the time that Witness #1 reached Fuller Rd at Railroad Ave, she had already driven past the female." 

Notes you can work with:

1. Travelling "southbound" on Fuller Road would be more like travelling southwest in real space. Google Maps hyperlink.
2. If Witness 1 was accessing a gas station on her left, she must have been in the left-turning lane when she observed the "slow moving vehicle," which positions that vehicle on her right.
3. At the time of writing, there is a Valero Gas Station at 52 Fuller Road. On Google Maps, this station was A CITGO in September 2007. Lucky Petroleum is linked to the address 52 Fuller Road in 1997 through a document I consulted. That establishes a long-term connection that the address, 52 Fuller Road, has to petro companies. I think Witness 1 was turning left into a gas station that likely existed in 1985 at 52-60 Fuller Road.
4. While driving southwest, the road curves to the right around 52-60 Fuller Road.
5. Witness 1 describes seeing Karen after Witness 1 visits the gas station. This sighting is adjacent to Sysco Foods.
6. A 2004 report I found online, unrelated to the disappearance, mentions a Fuller Road Sysco Foods with the address of 76 Fuller Road. This address corroborates a 1984 Yearbook that had an advertisement of some sort in it that marked Sysco Foods' address in the range of 71-85 on Fuller Road. That would mean Karen was on the west side of the street in that address range, near a guide rail when Witness 1 spots her.
7. It would normally take an individual a few minutes to refuel.
8. A few minutes earlier, Karen's location would likely have been near the gas station where the man in the vehicle was driving slowly with an "intent" look on his face.
9. Witness 1 passed Karen by the time Witness 1 got to Railroad Avenue.

• Male Driver: A white male in his 40s, with a beard, reddish-brown hair, long nose, and an "intent look" on his face, drove a slow-moving vehicle nearby. Vehicle details are vague.

With some struggles with AI, the following image is the one I produced using ChatGPT. It shows Male Driver's car driving southwest while Witness 1's car turns into the gas station. Witness 1 observed the Male Driver in the car with an "intent" look on his face. The black car is supposed to be in the top lane while the red car should be turning from the second southwest-heading lane. AI struggled (or I struggled with AI) to get the exact image I wanted. But Witness 1 turning to get gas, the Male Driver staying on the street and heading southwest is what I wanted to depict. Also, the blue-shaded area is where I think Karen might be. She is only reported after Witness 1 leaves the gas station.

Presumably, only a few minutes later, Witness 1 leaves the gas station. Neither Male Driver nor his car are seen again by Witness 1. It's at this point that Witness 1 first describes Karen further up Fuller Road near Sysco Foods at 76 Fuller Road. In the scenario I construct, Male Driver is driving ahead of the scene toward the underpass at I-90.

Witness #2 and Sighting at about 8:10–8:15 PM Quote from original source: "2) The second sighting of the female believed to be Karen, was also on the west side of Fuller Road. This was between 8:10Pm - 8:15PM. Witness #2 stated that the female was walking south of the entrance of Six Mile Waterworks (also known as Rensselaer Lake) near the construction road leading west off of Fuller Road. This area is located just north of the I-90 underpass. The female was walking on the grassy portion off of the sidewalk, with her head down. A smaller person of unknown sex was walking along Karen's right side ("almost shoulder to shoulder") seemingly urging her up an embankment or incline into the Six Mile area. The smaller person was described as being between 5'5" - 5'8", and between 120 - 140 pounds. When the female turned her head to the left, Witness #2 thought she appeared nervous. Witness #2 also described a white male following 50 to 100 feet behind the two subjects. He was walking at a steady pace, not seeming to be gaining on the two. He was described as being about 5'11" with a slim build, in his early 20's, and wearing dark pants and a waist length jacket (possibly beige). He had light colored hair (gold to red), and a beard or some type of facial hair. The couple then returned to the sidewalk and began walking in a normal manner southbound on Fuller Road. After Witness #2 stopped at the red light at the I-90 ramp, and then continued southbound, she saw the couple past the dirt construction road on the right, just out from the I90 underpass. Witness #2 also stated that she saw a stopped or disabled small unoccupied black vehicle at Fuller Rd at Washington Ave Ext. The vehicle had a New York plate bearing partial plate 239 (and unknown letters). The car was sedan style, and believed to be about five years old. The driver's window was down about 6"; and the passenger window was down about 2". She thought this was odd, because it looked like it was about to rain. Also noted on the driver's side window was a hole about 1/4" in diameter with cracks radiating from it. She thought that it looked like a bullet hole."

Notes you can work with:

1. South of the entrance of Six Miles Waterworks would place Karen about here: Google Maps (42.694634861662024, -73.8298719623739).
2. This would be further south/southwest than where Witness 1 saw Karen. Fuller Road curves, which can cause confusion when directions are described.
3. There is a timing discrepancy between the witnesses. The first witness claimed a sighting at 815pm. Since Karen was walking south, a sighting further south should be after 815pm. The only thing that can be assumed is that the witnesses were not able to provide exact times.
4. The construction road is probably the now-paved road that meanders west from Fuller Road after the modern traffic circle. The phrase "construction road" appears to be informal, designating usage by construction crews. By modern maps, there is grass there to walk on.
5. Smaller Person is with her. This might be Male Driver from Witness 1. But it might not be.
6. As witnessed, Smaller Person is urging Karen up an embankment.
7. I used the 2007 Google Maps to look at the area. The only thing resembling an embankment is the slope and grassy area between the construction road and the I-90 overpass. This area is highly vegetated in modern Google Maps in 2026, but it was less so in 2007 Google Maps images, creating the potential that it could be navigated in 1985 by pedestrians without having to deal with too much plant growth.
8. Following Male is 50 to 100 feet behind Smaller Person and Karen.
9. Witness 2 mentions stopping at a red light. I think this was at Washington Avenue. There is a red-light-ahead sign on Google Maps in 2007 near the construction road. Witness 2 states she saw the couple, presumably Karen and Smaller Person (ie., not Following Male), "past the dirt construction road" clearing the underpass. Based on the location of the only red light in the area I could find, this viewing would either be over the shoulder for a driver at the red light at Washington Avenue or using mirrors.
10. Witness 2 said she saw a "small unoccupied black vehicle" and, I think, that would basically be where the red light was and before it a little.
11. The implication of all this is that Smaller Person and Karen were heading toward this vehicle. This could be Smaller Person's vehicle, and it could be the vehicle that Witness 1's Male Driver was in.

Witness #3 (Male) and Sighting at 8:20 PM

As Witness #3 turned right onto the I-90 ramp, he saw a lime green Volkswagen Rabbit (estimated to be a 1981 or 1982) parked along the road. There was no one around the vehicle."

  AI-generated. Not the exact car. Indicative of what a lime-green Volkswagen Rabbit might have looked like around 1985, but no consideration for a specific year's model. The relevance of this vehicle was never that clear as I read the witness statements.
  
  

  The final sighting of Karen Wilson can seem puzzling because nothing in Witness #3's account overtly suggests that Karen was in immediate distress. Karen seemed to be in greater danger earlier.
  
  According to Witness 3, Karen was standing alone at the northwest corner of Fuller Road and Washington Avenue for approximately 10 seconds and appeared to be waiting for the traffic light to change. At that moment, she appeared to be continuing her journey south with things back to normal for her.

• In some ways, with Witness 3's statements, Karen seems safer now than she was before. Being led up an embankment by an unknown person seemed to be the most dangerous act. Yet, this is the last reported sighting of her. What happened after she left that intersection remains unknown.

  Witness 3's statements presented some challenges to me. I think the image below will help readers understand the situation, but a couple of things need to be reviewed first. The Washington Avenue overpass that exists now at the intersection was constructed in 2012 and, accordingly, was not there in 1985. Therefore, modern Google Maps is not a good overhead view of the area for this mystery from 1985. Furthermore, when you look at the image below, the rectangle image representing Witness 3 is meant to be in the north lane of Washington Avenue (ChatGPT wouldn't cooperate with my prompts in full).
  
  The image below shows the short time frame that Witness 3 describes. Karen, the circle in the image below, looks like she is going to cross the street heading south. Witness 3 sees her, turns right, and then notices a man who, in my opinion and interpretation of the statements, jaywalks. Witness 3 sees the man heading toward construction trailers before appearing to change his mind about something. Jaywalking Male then heads south on the opposite side of the street to Karen but was originally positioned behind her, suggesting he is Witness 2's Following Male. That could be because Karen appears to be safe on the northwest corner of Washington Avenue and Fuller Road at last sighting, but Jaywalking Male is thought to have followed her. That aligns Witness 3's Jaywalking Male's behavior with Witness 2's Following Male's behaviour.

• My Best-Fit Scenario: Witness 3’s Jaywalking Male is Witness 2’s Following Male and Witness 1's Male Driver and Karen's stalker. This stalker may be associated with the lime-green vehicle. Meanwhile, Smaller Person is a concerned citizen and likely operated the black sedan with the bullet hole in it. This provides a continuity that explains all elements in the three witness statements logically.

• When it comes to guessing what might have happened, all that I really aim to do is provide something convincing that aligns with all the facts. This does not make it anything more than guesswork, but my guesswork for this case is after a thorough review of what's available. I do have to abandon the times given by the witnesses as authoritative in my construction of what might have happened on Fuller Road on the evening of March 27th, 1985. They are contradictory times.

2. By 8PM: I conjecture that Male Driver/Jaywalking Male/Following Male is stalking her, or he is about to begin stalking Karen. I also conjecture that no witness is aware of this at this point. 
3. Around 8:07PM: I think this is about when Witness 1 first notices the vehicle driving slowly with Male Driver. My conjecture is that Male Driver decides to drive ahead sometime after Witness 1 sees him. In this scenario, my conjecture is that he parks his vehicle near an underpass ahead with plans to use that semi-secluded area to attack Karen. She is heading toward that area on foot. In effect, Male Driver has anticipated her walking trajectory correctly.
4. Witness 1 did not notice the vehicle's description but instead noticed the man, who appeared intent (established from witness statements). His hair is gold to red in color.
5. Around 8:10PM: Witness 1 is done getting gas (my conjecture). She drives further south on Fuller Road and notices Karen near 76 Fuller Road (established from witness statements), the historical address for Sysco Foods (established fact through business reports).
6. Witness 1 then exits the area where Karen is (established fact).
7. Witness 2's statements form the next evidence and sighting along Fuller Road. Meanwhile, Male Driver has driven ahead and parked his car near the I-90 underpass.
8. Around 8:15PM: Witness 2 sees someone leading Karen up an embankment (established from the witness statements). This person is described as a smaller-stature person, who I will call Smaller Person. Based on my study of the region, the embankment was likely at the intersection of the I-90 underpass and Fuller Road.
9. There is also Following Male in Witness 2's statements.
10. In my opinion, Smaller Person is trying to help Karen while Following Male is the Male Driver that Witness 1 saw. Under this scenario, Following Male/Male Driver parked his car and attempted to stalk Karen on foot in the area around the underpass. Smaller Person is someone who responded to a call for help or realized that something was amiss. That Smaller Person leads Karen up an embankment might be an attempt to avoid the underpass area altogether and to cross I-90. However, this may have proven futile as crossing an interstate can be difficult on foot due to traffic.
11. Witness 2 gets to the red light at Fuller Road and Washington Avenue and notices a black sedan with a bullet hole in it. Witness 2 looks behind and sees Karen and Smaller Person emerge from the underpass. Following Male is not described, and Karen appears to have cleared the most dangerous area. In this scenario, the leading up the embankment is not the disappearance event: Karen is seen after this event twice.
12. Following Male (Witness 1's Male Driver) would be behind Karen and Smaller Person at this point, perhaps in the I-90/Fuller Road underpass area. He does not approach Karen because of Smaller Person's presence.
13. Smaller Person, presumably, owns the black sedan with the bullet hole. He or she enters that vehicle but does not offer Karen a ride or Karen declines a ride. That creates the next witness sighting, where Witness 3 sees Karen alone at Fuller Road and Washington Avenue.
14. Around 8:20PM: Witness 3 sees Karen at Fuller Road and Washington Avenue. This is the last time anyone has seen her. That intersection is her last-known location. 
15. Witness 3 claims Karen is alone, which would mean that Smaller Person was not present by her side any longer, which makes sense if Smaller Person owned or operated the black sedan that Witness 2 described.
16. Witness 3 turns north on Fuller Road and sees a jaywalker, whom I will call Jaywalking Male. In this scenario, the jaywalker is Karen's stalker, and he is the same person as Witness 2's Following Male and Witness 1's Male Driver. That makes sense following the progression from Witness 2 to Witness 3 in terms of real space.
17. Witness 3 describes Jaywalking Male as originating on the west side of Fuller Road, which is where Witness 2 described seeing both Following Male and Smaller Person in relation to Karen. Jaywalking Male appears to be no longer stalking Karen when he jaywalks, as he may have given up due to Smaller Person's intervention.
18. Witness 3 depicts Jaywalking Male as indecisive. But Witness 3 says Jaywalking Male ultimately heads south on the east side of Fuller Road. Witness 3 also says that there was a lime-green Volkswagen Rabbit in the area, which, in this scenario, could be Jaywalking Male's car. This would make it the parking spot that Male Driver selected when spotted by Witness 1.
19. Witness 3 exits.
20. In this scenario construction, Jaywalking Male, after his indecisiveness, has decided to resume stalking Karen. If true, then that would make Karen's abduction at a point north of Washington Avenue and Fuller Road.
