Unidentified Female NamUs #UP147381 Found in Maple Falls, Washington - Case Details

Potential Matches for Unidentified Female NamUs #UP147381 - Missing Persons in Washington

This_Spans article explores potential matches for the unidentified female (NamUs #UP147381) found in Maple Falls, Washington. NamUs lists the discovery date as November 28th, 1978, however, I think this is wrong. The discovery made the news on that date, suggesting that the remains were found at least the day prior. Newspapers are printed so early in the morning that same-day news is rare, except for evening editions.

Bellingham Herald. November 28th, 1978.

The remains, consisting of a skull with maxillary teeth, right pelvis, right femur, and right tibia, belong to a female estimated to be under 40 years old.

Notes on Remains

The way the teeth sounded, it said that the maxillary teeth were present. This made me think that the other teeth were not. The way it read, I assumed that the mandible may have been missing.

Top Candidates for Missing Women in the Area

The following are candidates for this Jane Doe, ranked in order. They warrant picking over by anyone interested in the topic.

Rank NamUs # Name Date of Last Contact Age City, County Reason for Ranking
1 MP31485 Marla Thomas 12/11/1974 22 Years Anacortes, Skagit Skagit County is adjacent to Whatcom County (~40 miles). Last seen in 1974, 4 years before the remains were found, aligns with a plausible PMI for skeletal remains. Age (22) fits "Adult - Pre 40."
2 MP4581 Jeannette Miller 09/16/1970 17 Years Arlington, Snohomish Snohomish County is near Whatcom County (~60 miles). Last seen in 1970, 8 years before, is possible for skeletal remains. Age (17, would be 25 by 1978) is within range.
3 MP14106 Pamela Burrows 01/01/1973 23 Years Seattle, King King County (~100 miles) is farther, but Seattle was a hub for missing persons. Last seen in 1973, 5 years before, fits PMI. Age (23) is ideal for "Adult - Pre 40."
4 MP14223 Teresa Davis 11/01/1973 18 Years Tacoma, Pierce Pierce County (~130 miles). Last seen in 1973, 5 years before, fits PMI. American Indian / Alaska Native aligns with "Uncertain" race and "Unknown" tribal land status.
5 MP14018 Salie Signani 06/01/1973 32 Years Renton, King King County (~100 miles). Last seen in 1973, 5 years before, fits PMI. Age (32) is within range but older than top candidates.
6 MP11981 Nellie Davis 01/27/1975 35 Years Duvall, King King County (~100 miles). Last seen in 1975, 3 years before, is a close PMI. Age (35) is near the upper limit of "Pre 40."
7 MP14228 Lorelee Lhotka 01/01/1975 19 Years Seattle, King King County (~100 miles). Last seen in 1975, 3 years before, is a close PMI. Age (19) is ideal, but distance lowers ranking slightly.
8 MP4935 Barbara Jolly 08/22/1976 19 Years Seattle, King King County (~100 miles). Last seen in 1976, 2 years before, is a very close PMI. Age (19) is ideal, but distance lowers ranking.
9 MP4398 Cherry Greenman 09/14/1976 20 Years Waterville, King King County (~100 miles). Last seen in 1976, 2 years before, is a very close PMI. Age (20) is ideal, but distance lowers ranking.
10 MP5896 Rhonda Burse 08/08/1977 21 Years Burien, King King County (~100 miles). Last seen in 1977, 1 year before, is a very close PMI. Age (21) is ideal, but distance lowers ranking.

Next Steps

To identify this Jane Doe, forensic comparison (especially dental records, given the maxillary teeth) is critical. Contact the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office or NamUs at namus@ncmec.org to request comparisons for the top candidates, particularly Marla Thomas, Jeannette Miller, and Pamela Burrows. If you have information about this case or any of the listed missing persons, please share it with authorities to help bring closure.

The Unsolved Disappearance of Daniel Andrew Weaver in Waco, Texas

The Unsolved Disappearance of Daniel Andrew Weaver in Waco, Texas

On Tuesday, January 18th, 1983, 20-year-old Daniel Andrew Weaver left his home in Waco, Texas, and disappeared, leaving behind a mystery unsolved after more than four decades. He told his wife, Tamara Weaver, he was visiting his father before heading to his 7-11 gas station job for a 4pm to midnight shift. Daniel never reached work, and he has not been seen or heard from again.

His vanishing spurred a robust investigation involving police, three grand juries, and private detectives hired by his brother, David Weaver. The case deepened in 2006 when his stepmother, Lydia Weaver, submitted a will she claimed Daniel signed. A Texas court deemed it forged, per a 2007 UPI report. David, who contested the will, had Daniel declared dead, calling the legal fight part of a broader puzzle.

Suggestions That Daniel Died Close to His Disappearance Date

Daniel did leave behind an uncashed paycheque from his job at 7-11. In my experience reviewing missing persons cases, failure to cash pay or failure to claim an asset has often been a very big clue that the person is deceased. Furthermore, that he didn't collect his inheritance is a big clue that he died at about the time of his disappearance.

In another case from the same era, Robby Peay's failure to collect his inheritance was long considered to imply his death. He was, in fact, found dead just recently.

Clothing and Accessories Not Mentioned in Case Files

I could not find any clothing descriptions for Daniel Weaver. However, the details of a John Doe are worth cross-referencing to Weaver's case if you come across one associated with a 7-11 or gas-station employee uniform. He was going to work when he disappeared, at least after going to his father's. Note that 7-11 convenience stores can have different brand names for gas service, so any gas station uniform could be in play. The address of the store was 1225 N. 56th Street, presumably in Waco, Texas.

Family History is on the Dark Side

The following newspaper article will provide insight into the investigation and family dynamics surrounding Daniel's disappearance. It is part 1 and part 2 side by side, as the article was printed on separate pages. These images will enlarge when clicked. I think this article is particularly important for someone interested in this case.

Waco Tribune-Herald, July 26, 1987 (Part 1)

Waco Tribune-Herald, July 26, 1987 (Part 2)

Later, Lydia and Daniel’s father (Ray Weaver, who died in 1997) both invoked their Fifth Amendment rights during a 1987 grand jury. The forgery does stand out as an important flag in this case. Furthermore, Daniel was in line for an inheritance when he turned 21. Could he be one of Texas’s unidentified remains? The table below lists his factual case details, followed by potential matches from NamUs.

Last Known Location Waco, Texas 76708, wife saw him leave his apartment. The 7-11 address and the address of his father are in the article above.
County McLennan County
Demographics Full Name Daniel Andrew Weaver
Biological Sex Male
Missing Age 20 Years
Current Age Would be 62 years old if alive
Race / Ethnicity White / Caucasian
Physical Description Height 5' 8" (68 Inches)
Weight 140 lbs
Hair Color Brown
Left Eye Color Brown
Right Eye Color Brown
Circumstances Circumstances of Disappearance Daniel had left his home in Waco to go to work at the 7-11 gas station on 1/18/1983. He was supposed to work a shift reported as 4am to 12 midnight at NamUs, but this is likely an error, as it suggests a 20-hour shift. It was likely meant to be from 4pm to midnight. He never showed up for work, and this was the last time anyone saw him.

Potential Unidentified Matches for Daniel Weaver

I looked through seventeen John Doe cases where some of the case information above aligned. Some of them were easy to rule out. However, the cases below were ones where I had some confidence that a John Doe might be Daniel Weaver. In particular, UP1811 and UP4575 are cases that are worth looking at closely. I think I will return to this blog post another time, but anyone who wants to build on the table below, feel free to with a citation.

UP Case Details Subject Match Probability
UP1811 Irving (Dallas Co.), found 12/12/2002, Male, White/Caucasian, 20-39 years, 5'6", 130 lbs, body parts in plastic bags, hands missing Moderate confidence (demographics, height, and weight align closely, and location is plausible at 95 miles from Waco, but the 19-year gap and lack of PMI make it uncertain; comparisons were limited due to minimal information on the John Doe, such as no PMI, hair/eye color, or clothing; I think the missing hands might have been an attempt to hide the John Doe's identity by eliminating fingerprints, a key identifier in the pre-DNA forensic era)
UP14785 Denton, found 12/27/1984, Male, White/Caucasian, 20-22 years, light brown hair, partial skeletal remains with mummified skin, hands missing Mild confidence (demographics, age, and hair color align closely, and location is plausible at 130 miles from Waco, but PMI of 1 year suggests death around December 1983, 11 months after Daniel's disappearance, making a match less likely unless the PMI is inaccurate; comparisons were limited due to minimal information on the John Doe, such as no height, unreliable weight due to partial remains, and no clothing; I think the missing hands might have been an attempt to hide the John Doe's identity by eliminating fingerprints, a key identifier in the pre-DNA forensic era)
UP4075 Houston, found 4/11/1988, Male, White/Caucasian or Hispanic/Latino, 20-30 years, 5'4", 145 lbs, black hair, short mustache, wearing Levi jeans (29x30), red/blue T-shirt, brown/orange boots, ProTime wristwatch Low confidence (demographics, age, weight, and mustache align, and location is plausible at 170 miles from Waco, but black hair differs from Daniel's brown hair, height is off by 4 inches, and the 5-year gap with a decomposing state suggests a more recent death; comparisons were limited due to minimal information on the John Doe, such as no PMI or eye color, and lack of Daniel's clothing details from 1983)
UP4518 Freestone, found 10/2/1984, Male, White/Caucasian, 20-25 years, 5'5", 127 lbs, black hair, black mustache, brown eyes, scars on back, leg, ankle, foot, and abdomen, wearing gray sweatshirt (L, "Sportman"), gray warm-up suit (M, "DJ Smash"), white T-shirt (38-40), "Oscar De Laurente" blue jeans, gray velcro athletic shoes (6.5), gray briefs with maroon trim, black "General Quartz" watch in pocket Low confidence (demographics, age, eye color, and mustache align, and location is very close at 60 miles from Waco along I-45, but black hair differs from Daniel's brown hair, height is off by 3 inches, shoe size 6.5 seems small, multiple scars not noted in Daniel's profile, and 1984 estimated year of death is 1-2 years after disappearance; comparisons were limited due to minimal information on the John Doe, such as no PMI, and lack of Daniel's clothing details from 1983)
UP4575 San Jacinto, found 12/11/1983, Male, White/Caucasian, 20-40 years, partial remains with soft tissues, hands missing, found in wooded national forest hunting area Moderate confidence (demographics and age align, location is plausible at 150 miles from Waco in a remote wooded area, and PMI of 1 year is a near match, suggesting death around late 1982 to early 1983, aligning closely with Daniel's disappearance; comparisons were severely limited due to minimal information on the John Doe, such as no height, weight, hair, eye color, or clothing; I think the missing hands might have been an attempt to hide the John Doe's identity by eliminating fingerprints, a key identifier in the pre-DNA forensic era)

Notes on the pictures:

I have to say that these pictures do not look like the same person to me. I feel that way even if the black and white photo is from high school and the color photo is up to eight years later. However, there are no notes at NamUs suggesting that they are different people. The details for the case are sparse as well.

Unraveling the Mystery: Key Insights and Updates

Has Sandra Faye Thompson been found?

The Websleuths community has kept Sandra’s case alive, with discussions dating back to 2016, without their activity, there would not be much available online to read about this missing person. There is speculation online about a possible connection to unidentified remains, such as UP116037, covered here at MPC. This is a Jane Doe discovered in Palm Bay, Florida, in January 1985, though no definitive link has been established.

Points Comparing Sandra Faye Thompson to UP116037 (Attempt to Match)

Websleuths Username: SimsGuy67, to my knowledge, associated the cases first.

Geographical Proximity: Sandra disappeared from Jacksonville, Florida, while UP116037 was found in Palm Bay, Florida, about 150 miles apart, both within the same state.

Timeline Alignment: Sandra went missing on July 2, 1984, and UP116037 was discovered on January 17, 1985, a gap of roughly 6.5 months, which matches UP116037’s estimated PMI of 6 months. This suggests the unidentified individual may have died around mid-1984, which is almost to the day when Sandra disappeared.

Age Range: Sandra was 26 years old at the time of her disappearance, fitting squarely within UP116037’s estimated age range of 24-28 years.

Height: Sandra’s height was 5'5" (65 inches), slightly above UP116037’s estimated range of 5'2" to 5'4" (62-64 inches), but within a reasonable margin of error for skeletal estimates.

Weight: Sandra weighed 100 lbs, aligning closely with UP116037’s estimated weight of 95-105 lbs, indicating a similar slender build.

Race/Ethnicity: Both Sandra and UP116037 are classified as White/Caucasian, supporting a potential match

Is there some kind of alignment between the UP and the MP in a more abstract way? The body seems to have been a body dump. Somehow, that's consistent with the MP having dangerous associations, as suggested at the Websleuths forum. However, the chart below sticks to more convincing points of comparison.

My AI's Assistant's Guess on the Probability That This is a Match

Mathematical guesses using AI are just food for thought. But they are nice to have because they can eliminate the bias we bring to research efforts as humans. For instance, as a researcher, you sort of want the match to be right and that can affect you. AI doesn't have such wants. The more information that's available, the better but here's what Grok had to say about the chances of these two being one and the same person.

"I’d estimate a 70-75% chance that Sandra Faye Thompson and the Jane Doe are the same person. This reflects a strong likelihood driven by timeline, age, and physical overlap, tempered by the distance between locations and absence of conclusive forensic or circumstantial links. Rounding for simplicity, I’ll settle on 75% as a reasonable mathematical guess, acknowledging it’s an approximation based on available data." (Grok, X's AI)

Basically, the physical characteristics, age, and timeline match, but there is doubt due to distance and a lack of conclusive forensic evidence. Still, I think these two cases need to be looked at

Criteria Sandra Faye Thompson UP116037 Match? Explanation
Geographical Proximity Jacksonville, Florida Palm Bay, Florida (150 miles) Both locations are in Florida, 150 miles apart, a reasonable distance for a potential connection.

Last contact: March 28th, 1999 (Sunday)
Last location: Columbus, Ohio (one source said the Southfield area of Ohio)
Age when Reba Dawn McCoy disappeared: 32
Sex: Female
Height in inches: 62 (which is 5'2")
Weight in pounds (lbs): 110

BMI means body mass index. It is meant to describe someone's healthy body weight relative to the individual's height. It is only food for thought because it does not account for all body types. Reba Dawn McCoy had a BMI of 20.12. She was at a healthy weight by BMI standards at the time of her disappearance.

Has Reba Dawn McCoy been found?

I started to research the missing person case of Reba Dawn McCoy tonight. I was disappointed to find that there were not many details available on her case.

This missing person did use some aliases. In cases like this, it can be hard to find information. However, I did locate her picture associated with a Facebook page under the name Reba Williams McCoy. Her NamUs page also has "Reba Barry" and "Rebbie" as potential aliases.

It was my understanding that someone who knew and cared about Reba created the Facebook profile for her. It only featured old photos.

I had a lot of questions in this case. Mainly, I wondered why anyone thought that she was going to New York. Then, I wondered what her method of transportation was. Was she known to be a hitchhiker? I did find someone online who identified as the MP's daughter.

In place of being able to find any solid information online, I contacted some people on her Facebook profile. Furthermore, I decided to look at the Jane Does in NamUs for some potential matches.

Reba Dawn McCoy - Attempt to Match to Unidentified Jane Does

Based on the limited information there is concerning this missing person, she could be the following Jane Does:

Reba McCoy vs #UP6054

NamUs #UP6054 is a white-female Jane Doe who was found dead in Brooklyn, New York on a shoreline. She was estimated to be 100 lbs and 5'5" tall, which is in the ballpark of Reba Dawn McCoy. Furthermore, the Jane Doe had long brown hair. Lastly, the Jane Doe was found in Brooklyn, which is in the New York City area, the area that Reba was thought to be traveling to.

This Jane Doe was found on June 17th, 2000, a year and three months after Reba was last seen. The Jane Doe was thought to have died in the year 2000. Furthermore, she was given a broad age range of 18-35 years old. Reba was 32 years old when she went missing and would have been at the upper end of the age range on June 17th, 2000.

The Jane Doe had a size 32B bra size, which is not busty. I don't know if that is a match to Reba, but only going by her circulated photos, she didn't seem voluptuous.

In summary, the date of death, the sex and race, the location in New York, the close height and weight estimates, the hair color, and the figure between Reba and Jane Doe #UP6054 do reasonably match up.

Reba McCoy vs #UP6124: Comparisons Summarized in a Table

Here’s a table comparing Reba Dawn McCoy to NamUs #UP6124:

AttributeReba Dawn McCoyNamUs #UP6124Comparison Notes
SexFemaleFemaleMatch
Ethnicity/RaceWhite/CaucasianWhiteMatch
Height5'2" (62 inches)5'3" (63 inches)Very close (1-inch difference)
Weight110 lbs125 lbsClose (15-lb difference)
Hair ColorBrown, longStraight brownMatch (both brown; length unspecified for #UP6124)
Eye ColorGreenNot specifiedNo data to compare
Age32 (at disappearance, 1999)Estimated 25-35 (in 1999)Match (32 falls within range)
Last Seen/Found DateMarch 28, 1999Found May 8, 19995-6 weeks apart; plausible timeline
LocationColumbus, Ohio (last seen)New York, NY (found)Reba possibly headed to NY; aligns
Distinctive MarksTattoo on upper left arm ("D" or "Da")Not specifiedNo tattoo info for #UP6124; inconclusive
Date of DeathUnknown (disappeared 1999)Estimated 1999Consistent with disappearance year

Observations:
  • Strengths: Sex, race, hair color, age range, and New York connection align well. The height and weight are close, and the timeline (5-6 weeks) is plausible for a match.
  • Weaknesses: Lack of eye color or tattoo details for #UP6124 limits certainty. The 15-lb weight difference could be due to estimation or post-mortem changes.
  • Conclusion: The similarities suggest a reasonable possibility of a match, but without forensic confirmation (e.g., DNA or tattoo verification), it remains speculative.
#UP6124 is the most likely match, in my opinion, of all the unidentified Jane Does in NamUs, due to the timeline and physical similarities. AI (X's Grok) suggests a 50% chance that Reba is UP6124. I don't consider this to be forensic evidence, but I do see it as validation that we humans are not simply seeing something we want to see. The percentage chance will go up or down based on new information and should only be treated with caution, critical thinking, and skepticism.

Please advise if more details become available in the chat comments regarding either Reba or the Jane Doe.

Has Lawrence Anthony Feeley been found?

I did some research on this case tonight. There were not many hits in the newspaper database I use. However, I think I found information on this person's address and the names of close family members, if anyone needs it for further research then use the newspapers below.

Lawrence Anthony Feeley's name appeared as an exact match in June 25th, 1964 edition of The Signal (snipped below). It appeared as though he had graduated from junior high or middle school as the article noted that he was about to enter high school.

Thousand Oaks Star. Nov. 23, 1970. Page 4.

In the following newspaper clipping, I do think that I found his birth notice in the newspaper. Note that the father's name is spelled "Laurence" in this source. It's derivations like this (ie. Larry, Lawrence, Laurence) that can make keyword searching in newspaper databases difficult. That's especially the case when you have to decide whether to use a middle name, middle initial, and/or last name. Numerous different combinations arise in these cases. But anyone working on this case might find the address that Lawrence Anthony Feeley was born into handy (5841 Colfax Avenue, North Hollywood).

If there is journalism that pertained to this missing person's case, then it evaded my search terms tonight. I used newspapers.com on January 8th, 2025, and worth a look into further as more newspapers are added.

Researching Missing Persons: Historical Clues and Possible Matches

Attempt to Match

I would say that the closest match in NamUS would UP4441. This is an individual who had brown hair, was thought to be between 20-35 years old, and was found in Los Angeles County. This unidentified individual also matches the height fairly closely (one inch) and was thought to have died as early as 1976. There are some discrepancies but it's worth looking at closer, I think.

NamUs #UP1234 (Attempt to Match) -- Unidentified Remains from December 15th, 1985

By: Shane Lambert

Unidentified Person: NamUs #UP1234

NamUs #UP1234 is a Jane Doe that hitchhikers discovered on December 15th, 1985. The journalism near the time of the discovery associated her with a series of bodies that were discovered in the area. She was the 5th body discovered in the area in 1985.

According to NamUs, these were "Human remains...found in an isolated wooded area northeast of the intersection of Hollywood Blvd and Palm Bay Rd in West Melbourne, FL." Other sources also state that the remains were found near Dairy Road. NamUs, at the time of writing, lists the human remains as those of a male, however, I would suggest that the composite sketch depicts a female. Furthermore, the newspaper articles I reviewed considered the individual to be a Jane Doe instead of a John Doe.

Newspaper coverage at about the time of the discovery

One reference that I believe pertains to this Doe is from the December 30th, 1985 edition of Florida Today. That journalism by Michael Lafferty claims that this Jane Doe was part of five women who were discovered deceased under the headline "Authorities keep mum on murders."  The excerpt below matches the location of where the body was found in NamUs. Also, it matches the time frame as two weeks before December 30th would have been December 16th, which is just one day off of the December 15th discovery,

December 30th, 1985. Florida Today.

December 16th, 1985. The Orlando Sentinel.

NamUs lists this person as having died at about the time of the discovery (0 months for PMI). The age range given is 36-45 years old. Her height is estimated to be 5'6" and no weight estimate is given.

One matter that did not make sense with NamUs is that the person's remains were listed as "near skeletal." I would think that would mean that she had been dead for at least a few months and the 0 months for PMI that NamUs lists therefore is not correct. It's clear that this profile is not accurate, given that the sex is wrong as per several other sources.

Dark blue pants with purple buttons and an elastic waistband were discovered near the body. Also, there was a floral print short sleeve blouse and underwear of color unknown.

The designation of the Doe as a male appears to be a mistake. Anyone looking at this case should cross-reference with missing women.

I think any amateurs cross-referencing this to women who are missing in the area should broaden all the criteria.

Attempts to Match

Patti Lou Volansky, pictured below, went missing on March 15th, 1985. For time and space gaps, that's nine months prior and 40 miles to the north. However, the clothing she was thought to have does not match the Jane Doe.

Tammy Lepert, pictured below beside the Jane Doe, is a closer facial match to the composite sketch of the Jane Doe. She went missing in July of 1983. For a time gap, that's almost 2.5 years between her "last seen" date and the discovery of the Jane Doe's skeletal remains. She went missing in Cocoa Beach, Florida, which is just 27 miles from where the Jane Doe was discovered.

The gap of time is not necessarily a reason to rule this out as a match because the remains were skeletal. That could be anywhere upward of three months. I would say that as far as composite sketches go, she is a very reasonable hit. The parting hair as depicted by the forensic artist is a match.

The height between the two is off by about two inches. However, investigators have trouble getting someone's exact height from skeletal remains. The clothing between the two does not match (pants vs skirt). However, Tammy had a floral design on her shirt and the Jane Doe did as well. There would be a large age gap between the two as the Jane Doe, at the younger side, was thought to be 36 while Leppert was 18 when she went missing.

Prognosis: it's doubtful that either of these two missing persons match.

Commentary and Research

By: Shane Lambert

Ramona Lynn Fey has not been seen since July 17th, 1995. Her vehicle was found in Mount Rainier National Park, making her a case of "Car found person missing," which is a popular tag on this blog.

This missing person case is not as clouded in mystery as some other ones. In my opinion, suicide is the most likely reason for her disappearance. However, the whereabouts of her remains is the question at hand.

The journalism on this missing person, by my research, started on July 19th, 1995. A short blurb appeared in The News Tribune out of Tacoma, Washington. She had left her car running in the park's parking lot, which shows some indifference to the vehicle. That may have been a call for help.

This individual was depressed and had a doctor for the matter. A blurb written a day after the one below stated that she had stopped taking her medication. The family described the woman as mentally ill and possibly suicidal.

Has Ramona Lynn Fey been found?

There is a chance that body parts of hers were found on September 13th, 2013. Some human remains were found on that day that have not yet been linked to an individual yet.

The NamUs Unidentified Person is #12200. The authorities are uncertain of the sex or other details of these body parts. However, I will point out that the coordinates given for where Ramona Lynn Fey was last seen and the coordinates of the body parts that were found are extremely close to one another when I pull them up on Google Maps. I'm not sure if this has to do with just a kind of "default" coordinates for the area or not.

The missing person has a webpage at Ancestry. There is a separate picture there of her which I decided to publish here. It may show the glasses that are associated with her case. Also, there appears to be a mole on her chin/cheek. Her date of disappearance is listed as her date of death at Ancestry, suggesting that her family members are satisfied to some extent that she died at the time of her disappearance.

Rahway County Jane Doe (Attempt to Match) - Was Her Name Annie Primroe?

By: Shane Lambert
Original Time of Writing: December 19th, 2021

I researched the case of the Rahway County Jane Doe almost five years ago, as of the original time of writing this article. If you are not familiar with the case, then, in a nutshell, in March 1887, a woman was found murdered in the town of Rahway, New Jersey. The details of her case became a bit of a media circus. Perhaps this is just like more modern murder mysteries, like the case of JonBenet Ramsey.

The Rahway County Jane Doe was thought to have been a passenger who had recently alighted a train before being murdered. That she was supposed to be a traveler made the case difficult to solve back in the late 1800s because it suggested that the woman was not a local. Accordingly, missing persons from anywhere in the world were -- and still are -- actually in play with this case.

Searching the Classifieds to Research the Case

Back in February 2017, I attempted to find a classified advertisement where someone was looking for a missing woman who was last seen in 1887. It used to be that if you lost touch with someone, then you might take to the newspaper classifieds to find the person.

Newspaper classifieds have been featured in other missing person cases that I have worked on. The case of Beverly Sharpman, last seen in Philadelphia, comes to mind as does the case of The Lady in the Well who was discovered in Saskatoon in modern times but thought to have been dead since the 1920s.

When I originally looked for someone back in early 2017 who might have been searching for the Rahway County Jane Doe, I failed in that effort. It could have been that the exact newspaper I needed was not in the databases I used at the time. I made a second attempt in December 2021, one that was successful in finding a lead that I can only call tenuous at this time.

Please read the classified advertisement below, which appeared in a Buffalo-area publication in 1902.
20 Jun 1902, Fri Buffalo Evening News (Buffalo, New York) Newspapers.com

Could Annie Primroe be the Rahway County Jane Doe?

Is Annie Primroe the Rahway County Jane Doe? This is something I want to prove or disprove.

Firstly, the year of disappearance matches up to the year that the Rahway County Jane Doe was murdered. The person who placed the classified advertisement, one "J.J.T.", says Annie had been "missing since 1887."

Secondly, there is a question as to whether Annie Primroe may have changed locations: in the final statement, J.J.T. seems to acknowledge that Annie may no longer be in the Buffalo area, the city where this classified advertisement was placed.

Furthermore, I do know that the train line that served Rahway, New Jersey, served New York state. I read a story in The Morning Call newspaper from February 26th, 1886, that attested to this (Page 8). The first clues, in this case, are very tenuous, but there's nothing to contradict a match between Annie Primroe and the Rahway County Jane Doe.

To better understand the potential connection, the following table cross-references key details between Annie Primroe and the Rahway County Jane Doe:

AttributeAnnie PrimroeRahway County Jane DoeNotes/Observations
Year of DisappearanceMissing since 1887 (per 1902 classified ad by J.J.T.)Murdered in March 1887Timelines match exactly, supporting a potential connection.
Location ConnectionFrom Buffalo, New York; last known location per ad.Found in Rahway, New Jersey; believed to be a traveler, possibly via train.Train lines connected Buffalo and Rahway in 1887, making travel between them plausible.
Marital StatusLikely unmarried in 1887 (ad suggests her name might have changed later, possibly due to marriage).Presumed unmarried; autopsy indicated she was a virgin, ruling out prostitution. Both appear to be unmarried in 1887, a point of corroboration.
Travel ContextJ.J.T. acknowledges Annie may have left Buffalo, suggesting she traveled.Believed to have alighted a train shortly before her murder. Both cases involve potential travel, aligning with the transient nature of the Jane Doe.

The family tree information can't be discounted. Annie is the cousin of J.J.T., she is the sister of Hattie Lesher, and, very importantly, Primroe appears to be a maiden name. This is actually a small clue that corroborates with the Rahway County Jane Doe.

J.J.T., in the classified advertisement, says "Her name was...Annie Primroe," in 1887, but the statement tacitly acknowledges that her name may have changed in the 15 years after that time. The most likely reason for a woman's name to change is through marriage. Thus, we can assume that Annie Primroe was not married at the time of her last contact with J.J.T. in 1887. The Rahway County Jane Doe, coincidentally enough, was actually thought to not be married.

On that matter, there was some discussion in a newspaper article I read that the Jane Doe, in some circles of gossip, was thought to have been a prostitute. However, during her post-mortem, I inferred they inspected her vagina and concluded that the Rahway County Jane Doe was a virgin. This discounted the notion that the Rahway County Jane Doe was a prostitute, and it strongly implies that she was not married. There seems to be some corroboration with Annie Primroe that is, admittedly, tenuous, but I felt intrigued enough to look at this lead deeper.

Research Angles and Challenges - Find a Record for Annie Primroe

For me, this is a work in progress that I invite others to look at. If you are interested in researching whether Annie Primroe might have been the Rahway County Jane Doe, then remember one important point: the primary goal is to try and disprove it. If you can't do that, then you can look at proving it.

One way to disprove that Annie Primroe was the Rahway County Jane Doe is to find her death record that proves she lived past 1887. She can't be declared dead in absentia or anything like that: in fact, dead in absentia might mean she was the Jane Doe. However, if you can prove that Annie Primroe lived past 1887, then it would mean she wasn't the Rahway County Jane Doe.

I have done some introductory work on this subject with Ancestry records. However, the name Primroe is not very common. I've wondered if it is meant to be "Primrose," however, as soon as you start working on angles like that, you are often going on futile tangents.

But finding Annie Primroe in Ancestry would be a great first step. The challenge is that her first name is the kind that has a lot of derivations, like Anne, Ann, or Anna. If you find someone who might be her, then keep in mind the family tree connections in trying to identify her. She has a sister named Hattie Lesher, with Lesher probably being a married name. "Hattie" can stand alone or it can mean Henrietta or Harriette. Hattie Lesher should be dead by June 18th, 1902. Also, Annie should have a cousin with the initials "J.J.T" who should be alive as of June 18th, 1902.

Any connections to Buffalo and Rahway County, New Jersey, would be very interesting, of course. If you build off of this article, please just be sure to properly cite me and link back.

Summary: Annie Primroe vs Rahway County Jane Doe

  • Annie Primroe went missing 1887, the year that the Rahway County Jane Doe was found deceased.
  • Primroe was from Buffalo, which has train connections to Rahway
  • Primroe was not married and the Rahway County Jane Doe was not married, presumptively, because she was a virgin
