Blood Spatter, Blood Volume: Comparing Singapore's Boy on the Tracks with the Murder of Polly Nichols

How Blood Evidence Shapes Crime Scene Investigations

How blood is left at a crime scene or a possible crime scene can be the result of many different processes: blood pooling, blood dripping, blood spattering, or blood spraying are some of the phrases that you will hear when watching forensic television shows.

But whether it drips, pools, sprays, or spatters, analyzing blood at a possible crime scene is part of the forensic sciences. It is in a branch known as forensic serology, which is the study of various body fluids, including blood.

It is important to know that the velocity of blood as it exits a human body can reveal important information as to whether the body was alive or dead at the time of the bleeding. Furthermore, the amount of blood at a possible crime scene can also reveal the same thing.

In this blog post, I'll look at two cases that are similar in one regard: in both cases, the blood at a crime scene was used to support the notion that the decedent at the scene was already dead when he or she bled out. The first case I will look at is the infamous 1888 murder of Polly Nichols in England, assumingly by the unknown serial killer dubbed Jack the Ripper. The second case I will look at is one from Singapore from 1972 where a boy thought to have died on train tracks in a train accident was then reassessed as already dead before being hit by the train.

The Murder of Polly Nichols: A Jack the Ripper Case

Firstly, let's look at the murder of Polly Nichols. She was killed in the Whitechapel area of London on August 31st, 1888. Due to her association with Jack the Ripper, there has never been a shortage of inquest into her death and that has produced expert conjecture pertaining to her murder.

Whoever killed Polly Nichols used a knife for either stabbing or making incisions on her neck, her vagina, her abdomen, and at other points on her body. However, one Forensic Physician, known as Dr. Jason Payne-James, expressed his opinion that Polly Nichols did not necessarily die as a result of these apparent wounds. Instead, there is a suggestion that Polly Nichols was first subjected to "manual strangulation" before her body was mutilated.

Dr. Payne-James shared this perspective in the 2014 Channel Five documentary "Jack the Ripper: The New Evidence." Originally, this article included an embedded clip from that documentary, but the link has since expired.

Strangulation, as the cause of death, has been used to explain why there was no blood spray at the scene of Polly Nichols's murder. There was blood pooling but that has to do with dripping, not spraying or spattering.

The difference between dripping and spraying results from a difference in blood pressure in the arteries. When the heart is beating, the arteries are pressurized. When the heart is not beating (i.e., the body is dead), then the pressures moving the blood are less forceful. If a corpse is pierced or sliced, then the blood might ooze out instead of being sprayed. That oozing would lead to blood pooling, and it’s this process that Dr. Payne-James described in his analysis.

The lack of blood pressure in a corpse has been used to explain how a man named Charles Lechmere, the man who was once thought to have only discovered the body of Polly Nichols, might actually have been her killer despite the fact that he had no blood spray on his clothes on the night of Nichols' murder. If Jack the Ripper (possibly Lechmere) strangled Polly Nichols to death before mutilating her, then he could still have walked the streets of the Whitechapel area without blood on his clothes. In short, that he was clean of blood spray does not clear him of the murder.

The Singapore Train Tracks Mystery: A Forensic Twist

The second case that I will look at is both similar and different. The case of a dead boy found on the Bukit Merah train tracks in Singapore in April of 1972 was covered in a course I took from Nanyang Technological University ("Introduction to Forensic Science" by Professor Roderick Bates).

According to Roderick Bates, the course instructor, in 1972 a train ran over a human body on a set of train tracks in Singapore. At first glance, one might have thought that the death of the boy should be ruled a suicide—that is, maybe he placed himself on the tracks knowing that the train wouldn't be able to stop in time to avoid running him over.

However, when a forensics-medicine specialist known as Chao Tze Cheng examined the scene, he concluded that there was not enough blood at the scene to make one think that the body was alive at the time that the train ran it over. That lack of blood had something to do with the unpressurized arteries that you find in a corpse. To Chao Tze Cheng, who was one of Singapore's top forensic authorities, that meant that the boy was already dead when placed on the tracks and that he may have been previously murdered.

Key Takeaways for Forensic Analysis

Websleuths or amateur investigators should note that blood spatter/spray and blood pooling/dripping could be a clue as to the state of the corpse at the time of any stabbing or incision. With the former, spattering and spraying would suggest that the decedent was alive at the time of the injuries. With pooling and dripping, it would suggest that the decedent was already dead at the time of the 'injuries.'

In both of the cases examined, the relative blood pressure between a living person and a dead person was central to taking an investigation in a certain direction. In the case of Polly Nichols, it showed that a suspect, Charles Lechmere, was not cleared of suspicion simply due to the fact that he had no blood on him. Since the cause of death may have been strangulation, the slicing and stabbing of the corpse would not have resulted in the spraying of blood on the person who wielded the knife. In the case of the boy on the tracks, it refuted the notion of suicide via train and allowed investigators to look for a murderer. According to Professor Roderick Bates, the investigation did conclude with charges.

Robert Charles Browne's Timeline -- American Murderer Claimed He Killed Dozens

Author: Shane Lambert
Time of writing: January 14th, 2021

This is a WORK IN PROGRESS for the timeline of Robert Charles Browne, a self-professed serial killer. Although he stated that he killed 49 people, I stuck to the crimes that are conventionally associated with him when constructing his timeline. Note, that many of the murders that he is mentioned in conjunction with are NOT convictions. However, I decided to include them as food for thought as there are those that are familiar with his life that think he should be considered a suspect in many murders.

If there a date and location that you think should be included, feel free to mention it in the comments. I'll have a look.

Serial Killer Bobby Jack Fowler Timeline - Dates of Where He Was or May Have Been

Researcher: Shane Lambert
Original publication date: January 9th, 2021
Updated: March 17th, 2025

Note: this is an on-going project that I will continually enhance. All statements in the timeline are believed to be accurate. In the event of an error, efforts will be made to correct the article.

The purpose of the information presented here is to provide a timeline of a known serial killer, Bobby Jack Fowler.

Serial Killer's name: Bobby Jack Fowler (1939 - 2006)
  • Bobby could also be Rob, Robert, or Bob. or some other variations, like Robby.

Relatives and Why They Are Listed

Bobby Jack Fowler isn't a unique name. Given that, relatives of the serial killer can be important when it comes to identifying him in a document. This is especially true when you come across less-specific names like "Bobby J. Fowler" "Robert J. Fowler" or even just "Bob Fowler." It can be very difficult to know if the documents pertain to the same person.

In particular, a name like "Bobby" has numerous derivations that all affect keyword searching for the worse. Bob, Rob, Robbie, Robby, Robert, Bobbie, and possibly more variations of the same name exist.

For that reason, I list the relatives of Bobby Jack Fowler as cross-referencing material for anyone searching the documentary record for this serial killer. The association does not mean that the following people, who are all deceased, were immoral or criminals like Bobby Jack Fowler was.

However, when faced with an abundance of names that could all be variations of Bobby Jack Fowler, a researcher needs to know who the other people are that were in his life. In this case, I decided to only include relatives who were of his immediate family and deceased.
  • Father: Selva Fowler (1915-1968)
  • Mother: Oma Lee Fowler (nee Hathaway) (1916-1991)
  • Sister: Linda Susan Fowler (1950-2004)
  • Brother: Walter Frank Fowler (1935-2004)
Social Security Number: ends with 215 (******215)

Addresses Associated With Bobby Jack Fowler

Some addresses are associated with Bobby Jack Fowler using Ancestry.com. However, what I found was that addresses at Ancestry don't necessarily contain specific information as to when someone was at a spot at an exact point in time.

For example, his 1996 address was in Portland. However, I note that this address was after his June 28th, 1995 arrest. If you want to have a look at his addresses, then use this exit link (membership with Ancestry.com may be required): Bobby Jack Fowler address search at Ancestry.com. But be aware that he could be anywhere, regardless of where his mail is being sent.

Bobby Jack Fowler's Timeline

Researching Bobby Jack Fowler's timeline was difficult. Mainly, some same-name matches made it hard to authenticate some aspects of his timeline.

However, I decided to publish what I found and simply state the doubts that I might have. Mainly, if I saw a report where the first, middle, and last names matched in conjunction with age, then I considered it very probable. Furthermore, I deferred to journalists writing for major publications, believing that they would have good reason for making their claims. I consider this timeline to be a work in progress.

Franklin, Williamson County, Tennessee
July 30, 1983 [BJF is 44] A "Bobby Jack Fowler" of Van Buren County committed arson by throwing gasoline on a neighbor’s house and the neighbor with intent to set a fire, was convicted of arson. Included due to exact name match and consistency with violent behavior; plausible doubt exists if this is a different Bobby Jack Fowler, if Van Buren County is an inaccurate location for the serial killer, or if the conviction is misattributed, requiring verification with Iowa court records. Source: The Dispatch, December 20, 1985. Van Buren County, Iowa
August 1983 – March 1986 [BJF is approximately 44-46] A "Bobby Jack Fowler" is incarcerated in Iowa for second-degree arson, serving two years and seven months of a 10-year sentence from his July 30, 1983, conviction; exact entry (August 1983) and exit (March 1986) dates are unknown. Iowa, USA

Included due to exact name match and age consistency with birth year (1939).

But the address of "95 Mathews Drive" is a strange one as it is only associated with businesses by the writer’s research; the writer wonders if BJF gave his place of employment as his address for some reason.

Beaufort County, South Carolina
December 14, 1989 [BJF is approximately 50] A "Bobby J. Fowler"  was cited for driving under the influence around this time. His license was suspended from December 14th, 1989 to June 14th, 1990.

This "Bobby J. Fowler" was mentioned as being of 95 Matthews Drive, Hilton Head. Note, the address from August 28th only had one "t" in Mathews.

If it is the serial killer, this would place him in Beaufort County, South Carolina.

Ted Bundy, His Timeline, and Sotria Kritsonis' news -- Filling in a Gap

Author: Shane Lambert

Who really knows how many people convicted killer Ted (Theodore) Bundy disappeared? Conventionally, when he is looked at the number of victims that is mentioned is in the 30s. However, there could be scores more. Accordingly, his timeline is important to be aware of when it comes to missing person's cases.

The timeline for Bundy's life was looked at a number of years ago. the US Department of Justice commissioned the Ted Bundy Multiagency Investigative Team Report 1992. At the time it was called an "exhaustive documentation of Bundy's activities...in the hopes that Bundy's suspected participation in crimes other than those he confessed to can be clarified" (from the report's "Director's Comments).

The full report can be found here: Ted Bundy's Timeline (if the link goes bad, comment and I can email you a copy of the report). It contains major events in his criminal career, such as the time and places of his known abductions. Furthermore, it contains banal day-to-day events -- like where he bought gas.

In 2018 there was a news story from Kiro 7 News in the Seattle area. The topic of the story was a woman's recounting of an experience with Ted Bundy. She was named Sotria Kritsonis and the news piece is below.

Although it contains information regarding Bundy's double-abduction day at Lake Sammamish, there is information that was fresh as of 2018 and it could also be added to the Ted Bundy Multiagency Investigative Team Report 1992. Please, take a few minutes to review the video, feeling free to skip the parts about Lake Sammamish.

The news piece does not contain complete information. The exact date of Bundy's and Kritsonis's encounter is not mentioned, nor is the exact address. However, the time frame in question can be deduced, the location can be found, and certain other important probably-true assumptions can be made.

The time frame in question was described as the winter of 1972 in the news piece. That did make me wonder if we were talking about the late months in 1972 or the early ones. Technically, winter starts on December 21st and goes to March 20th so, as the only season that covers two separate calendar years, there's a bit of question as to what someone means when they say "winter of 1972."

In answering that, I think the story that Sotria Kritsonis is telling is for some time in the months of January, February, or March of that year. The news piece says that she was 22 at the time. At the tail end of 1972, she would have been 23 by my research.

Thus, the time frame in question is January to March of 1972 and that's actually an empty spot for Ted Bundy in the Ted Bundy Multiagency Investigative Team Report 1992. See the snipping below of that report which shows an entry on New Year's Eve of 1971 and then no entry until April 15th, 1972. The encounter between Bundy and Kritsonis appears to be somewhere in that gap and if we take her accounting as true, then it shows that he was active during this unknown period.

The location of Kritsonis's abduction would have been near the intersection of Rainier Avenue South and Orcas Street. The following still, taken from the Youtube video, shows her walking south on what would be the west side of Rainier Avenue South. She says she encountered Bundy at a place very near the point in the still below.

If we take everything she says as true, then there's something important to note. Bundy did not just happen upon her and offer her a ride. Kritsonis made a statement that would suggest that Bundy was familiar with her changing hairstyle. That suggests a degree of stalker behavior or it could just be that he saw her at the bus stop on many different occasions. Kritsonis claimed that she cut her hair about a week earlier so that would put Bundy in the area of Rainier Avenue South and Orca Street for a period of at least a week.

The news piece says that Kritsonis saw Bundy on television a year and a half later. It's not really clear what she would have been watching in the summer of 1973 regarding Bundy. Most of his known crimes are from 1974 onward.

Missing Kids and Their Bicycles - Cases of Dario Cicolecchia, Janice Pockett, and Others

By: Shane Lambert

Season 2 of Forensic Files included an episode (Episode 12) that offers key insights for those studying missing persons cases. The episode covers the 1993 disappearance of Dario Cicolecchia, a boy in Switzerland, whose case led to a murderer’s capture and revealing statements about his methods. This case provides a nugget of information worth considering for similar mysteries.

Dario Goes Missing: Secluded Area, Unwittingly Leaves Trail for Pedophile to Follow

Dario went missing after leaving home on a bicycle to go fishing. He was later found dead and mutilated in a Swiss cornfield. Forensic medicine revealed he was drowned, with diatoms (one-celled organisms found in water) in his lungs. These diatoms matched a nearby creek, pinpointing the murder location, and were also found in the suspect’s car, linking the victim, car, and crime scene.

The convicted murderer, Roland Kubler, was featured in the *Forensic Files* episode “Micro-clues” (December 18, 1997), which examined his actions.

Note the Bicycle in this Case: It Acts As a Trail to Follow

Kubler claimed he spotted Dario’s bicycle near the road, signaling a young boy nearby. This triggered his actions, leading to Dario’s murder. He didn’t actively seek bicycles but stumbled upon one during other activities. This is notable because other missing children cases, where only bicycles are found, may follow a similar pattern. A visible bicycle could act as a trigger for a predator in a secluded area.

Is Roland Kubler Now Dead?

A Reddit discussion suggested Roland Kubler is deceased, but this lacks verification due to the informal nature of community forums. The Serial Killer Database Wiki lists him under ‘Dead Serial Killers,’ but without confirmed details from Swiss sources, his status remains unverified.

Janice Pockett Left Her Bicycle Visible Before Disappearing

Janice Pockett, missing from Tolland, Connecticut since July 26, 1973, rode her green banana-seat bicycle to a wooded area to retrieve a butterfly. Her bike was found near a road, but she vanished. This mirrors Dario’s case, suggesting a predator may have noticed her bike, prompting an investigation of the area.

Vicki Lynn Hoskinson Disappearance: A Child’s Bicycle is a Clue Again

In another case, Vicki Lynn Hoskinson (*Forensic Files* Season 3, Episode 11, “Speck of Evidence”) left a bicycle behind, as noted in a recent article. A child’s bicycle may act as an ‘advertisement’ to a predator, suggesting a young person nearby. In non-family abductions, items like bicycles, scooters, or skateboards could be key clues, indicating a serial predator noticed them.

This pattern suggests victims were pursued rather than randomly encountered. For more related mysteries, see: Women With Car Troubles Go Missing | Missing Person Phenomenon -- Bloodhounds Tracking Ends at Roadside

Thomas McMonigle, likely serial killer, and Thora Chamberlain (NamUs MP 36923)

Thora Chamberlain's NamUs profile was added in 2017 despite the fact that she went missing in November of 1945 when she was 14 years old (she's referred to as 15 years old in some articles I read, perhaps because she was close to her birthday).  According to NamUs's last accounting of her she "was seen getting into a stranger's vehicle outside her high school in Campbell and has not been seen since." That account doesn't really jive with the media coverage of the day. If we accept the conviction and confession of a murderer and another witness who claimed to see Chamberlain then she was certainly spotted after she got into the car.

Oakland Tribune - December 16 1945
In this case, the websleuths and mystery enthusiasts won't find anything too interesting to work on with Chamberlain's case. Her killer confessed and he spent time in prison. His name was Thomas Henry McMonigle (right) although Wikipedia's page for Thora Chamberlain appears to have his name wrong (they mention one "McGonigle"). McMonigle claimed that he abducted Chamberlain, shot her, and threw her over a cliff called Devil's Slide (see photo below) into waters that were described as tumultuous. According to one writer of the day "the undertow and swell is such that it is possible the body might have been torn to pieces within several days" (Oakland Tribune - Dec 16 1945). NamUs says that the girl's DNA is available, but the chances of finding something to compare too has to be considered at the utmost edge of the possible.

(Creative Commons/Lawrence Lansing).

How they got her DNA is a bit of a mystery since they weren't aware of the scientific advancement in 1945 and wouldn't be for a few more decades. But they did find her socks, which were of her school colors as she was abducted heading to a football game, near the spot that McMonigle said he killed her and they linked those socks to her. It could be that they were able to find some DNA from that clothing as evidence in crimes isn't simply discarded due to the passage of time. McMonigle was considered a suspect because of prior suspicion in a crime involving a similarly-aged female youth.

Besides McMonigle seeing Chamberlain, there's also the sighting of Mrs. Ella Beaudoux. She says she witnessed a girl in the back seat of a car near the scene and the time of the abduction "clawing at the window" at the back of the car as it sped away. Mrs. Ella Beaudoux was a Physician & Surgeon at the time of a 1921 passport application. In my opinion, such professionals are good witnesses when it comes to events that they have no personal connection to because they are not frivolous in what they say as they are well-schooled in the importance of facts in matters such as these.

At this point, we should look back at what NamUs said because I don't agree with the last-seen statement with that source which says that Chamberlain was last seen entering a stranger's car. Chamberlain was seen in the car after she got into it, the stranger they mention isn't an unnamed person by any stretch because McMonigle was proven to have killed her in court. The way NamUs makes it sound is like there's a mystery here.

But Chamberlain's fate isn't too mysterious and it is very possible that there's no further justice on the matter of her disappearance and death to be had. I would say that websleuths out there should not be working on Thora Chamberlain's case. Her body might be lost to the ocean and the creatures within it for seven decades now, making the situation of recovery entirely futile -- and pointless given that justice was actually served on her killer.

However, where websleuths should focus is on her abductor: Thomas Henry McMonigle is a probable serial killer in my view. Other girls identified him as trying to lure them into their vehicles. Working on his life history may yield a Ted Bundy-like history in my opinion. I noted some similarities for sure between the two:

  1. Luring victims into vehicles.
  2. Preying on women.
  3. Theft as a pettier crime.
  4. McMonigle defended himself at a trial as Bundy did.
  5. McMonigle had scores of women attesting to his character despite the evidence against him. Bundy also received a lot of support from adoring women while in prison.
  6. McMonigle had a problematic upbringing.
  7. Those that knew both were shocked to find out that each was capable of murder.
  8. Both were considered good looking and intelligent.
  9. Both were chronic liars.

McMonigle is someone whose life should be placed under a microscope. To start that, here are some details I uncovered:

  • Born: May 28th, 1914 in Covell, McLean County, Illinois, USA
  • Dead: Feb. 20, 1948 in Marin County, California, USA
  • He was in prison when he was 17 (sometime around May of 1931) according to one news source.
  • Occupations included bus driver, truck driver, and a guard at something called "Mills field" (The Times, San Mateo, California, December 17 1945)
  • Owned a 1933 Plymouth Sedan
  • Attempted to gain employment as the captain of ambulance drivers, was refused
  • Once remarked to have killed 11 people (source: Santa Cruz Sentinel, Aug 18 1957/writer: Don Becker)
  • Received death penalty for murdering Chamberlain despite the fact that her body was never found (considered strange in the press of the time)
  • In his teens (ie. March 28th, 1927 to March 28th, 1934) he was arrested for vagrancy, assault, and attempt to rape (source: Santa Cruz Sentinel, Aug 18 1957). He served an eight-year and three-month prison sentence at one point
  • His 4th arrest was for fighting a bus driver
  • His 5th arrest was for attacking a young girl, but the family didn't press charges. It's this arrest that made him a suspect in the Chamberlain disappearance.
  • He fled to Illinois sometime after the abduction of Chamberlain (ie. November 2, 1945)
  • He was also the suspect in the murder of what was called a "San Francisco negress" (a black woman)
  • I found no evidence of him serving in WWII.
  • He can be placed near East Alton/Edwardsville, Illinois on June 5th, 1934 when he would have been about 21 (The Edwardsville Intelligencer/page 2).
  • McMonigle appears to have participated in and lost a boxing match on Monday, March 23rd, 1931 (at the age of 16). The Alton Evening Telegraph in Illinois notes what seems to be his participation in bouts involving "Club and Unemployed Men." Alton is the area that McMonigle is associated with at that time in his life. The date of the fight would mean that McMonigle was not in custody at the time. Furthermore, the news article notes a body weight of 150 pounds at the age of 16.

  • He can be placed in Alton still, or again, around Monday, November 19th, 1931 (Alton Evening Telegraph, Page Two).
  • His father Stephen's address is mentioned as 316 Goulding Avenue in East Alton in a February 17th, 1941 in the Alton Evening Telegraph announcing the wedding of his daughter Alma
  • Brother Roy McMonigle was a criminal too (Alton Evening Telegraph/August 12th 1933)

Denise Kathleen Anderson's Disappearance -- Newspaper Clippings

Author: Shane Lambert
Original Time of Writing: February 2017
Major update: December 25th, 2020
All articles are subject to editing after the original posting.

Missing Person: Denise Kathleen Anderson
Last seen or contact date: April 13th, 1971 at 530am
Where last seen: Last seen in Sacramento at her apartment by one of her two roommates. The address was 925 - 16th street. Denise was sleeping in her bed at 530am.

NamUs # and Link: #MP27540

Ethnicity/Race: White
Sex: Female
Age at time of disappearance: 22 years old
Hair: Brown
Eye color: Brown
Height and weight at the time of disappearance: Straight, longer than shoulder length

Clothing: A wig was missing from her apartment. Black. Short-hair style.

Denise Kathleen Anderson has been missing since 1971. Her disappearance is perplexing. The last anyone saw of her was 530am on April 13th, 1971. At that time, it seems that she was sleeping. The person that saw her was a female roommate, one that borrowed Denise's car that day and returned it at 230pm. Denis was gone at that point, not yet to be seen again.

Denise had two jobs: one at a bank (a Wells Fargo Branch) and one as an actress at the Centerplayers theatre group. She did not show up for her work at the bank on April 13th, nor did she appear at other future rehearsals for the play that was opening.

I originally covered this case in 2017. At that time, I remember feeling dismayed that there wasn't much media coverage from the time of the disappearance.

However, in taking a fresh look at this case, I feel that there is one lead that needs to be investigated. Whether it has been or not is not something that I do not know. My opinion is that the Visalia Ransacker, also known as the East Area Rapist, also known as the Original Night Stalker, and also known as Joseph James DeAngelo should be considered a person of interest in this case.

In the article below, please note the address at the bottom of the left-hand-side column. It is the same as Denise Kathleen Anderson's address from the article above. I think there are significant implications.

As per the article embedded above, in late 1968, there was a rash of burglaries in Sacramento. One woman among the many victims, Marjory Gyger, was robbed of her purse. This woman's robbery is important because she lived at 925 16th street in what I assume to be Sacramento because the robberies were reported in The Sacramento Bee on October 16th, 1968.

The building at 925 16th street was an apartment. That can be ascertained from Denise's missing person's report. It can also be ascertained from classified ads that I read about the address. That means there would be more than one unit number and that's a point to take away. However, I still can't ignore that a robbery victim may have been of the same address as Denise, albeit 2.5 years earlier. It's shocking that they should post a victim's address but, that aside, it brings up three questions.
  1. When Marjory Gyger was robbed of her purse, did she lose her house keys in the purse?
  2. If she did, then were the locks ever changed?
  3. Was Marjory Gyger's unit number in the apartment the same as Denise's (ie. maybe Denise and her roommates were the next tenants)?
If the respective answers to those questions are "yes" and "no" and "yes" then a probability arises that a problem youth who was committing rampant robberies had the keys to Denise Kathleen Anderson's apartment. These are questions I invite websleuths or amateurs to help answer with whatever databases they have memberships for.

How did this problem youth get the address for the keys? One source would be any identification in the purse, however, there's an elephant in the room -- he could simply have got it from the newspaper coverage of the robberies.

The gap of 2.5 years between the street robbery and the disappearance of Denise Kathleen Anderson is, perhaps, unexpected. However, I don't feel it speaks too strongly to an unlikelihood of a connection between the two events.

When it comes to a connection to the Original Night Stalker, we all know he was the Visalia Ransacker between 1973 and 1976. That shows that he had a propensity for theft. Furthermore, his Wikipedia page delivers three key points:
  1. It says that in August of 1968 he was in Rocklin, about 30 minutes away from Sacramento. It says he was a student at Sierra College which would bind him to the greater-Sacramento area for at least a semester and it would place him within a short drive of the robberies.
  2. He attended Sacramento State University in 1971. Going by the modern Google Maps, the address of "925 16th street" and that university is just an 11-minute drive. I don't know what it would have been in 1971.
  3. His profile on Wikipedia says that he committed robberies as a teenager. While he was not a teen in 1968, that knowledge of him shows that he did not get his criminal start as the Visalia Ransacker.
A major point to take away is that Joseph James DeAngelo was in the area, both at the time of the robberies and at the time of Denise's disappearance. His convictions and reputation speak for themselves on other matters: this is, without any doubt following his 2020 convictions, a person that would be capable of entering someone's home with sinister intentions and disappearing a woman. If he was the "husky youth" that committed the robberies and if he got keys to an apartment that he knew the address of, then him attempting to enter that apartment would be a matter of course.

That the points I've made are circumstantial is not something I'll apologize for. I'm a guy with the Internet and a willingness to get database memberships to expand the Internet's searching power.

But I am only arguing that he's a person of interest, not that he did it. If he is not the person that committed the robberies, then whoever is that person would still be a person of interest. However, I do note a similar description: DeAngelo was a husky guy, just like the one described in the robbery article. Furthermore, I think DeAngelo was pretty smart and, if he was to visit the apartment, then he wouldn't do it until lots of time had passed.

Lastly, there is a cleverness to the purse snatchings that I think you see in DeAngelo's known crimes. The purse snatcher head-faked a woman: he reached for the woman's child and then when she guarded that child, he grabbed her purse. There's a clever modus operandi there, albeit of the evil kind. I always felt like DeAngelo was an intelligent guy with a craftiness that you don't see in many criminals.

That brings us to the conclusion of this article and a hypothetical scenario that I invite the reader to not just consider but to attempt to refute

The scenario starts with a rash of robberies in Sacramento in 1968, robberies that involved purse snatching. What if that purse snatcher was Joseph James DeAngelo? We all can agree that purse snatchings yield more than money -- they yield identification and keys. One of the victims of the purse snatchings was a woman who had an address that was the same as Denise Kathleen Anderson's, at least as far as the street address went.

What if they shared the same unit number in the apartment? Would that not potentially put Denise's apartment keys in the hands of a very dangerous man? If the locks weren't changed, then that's what it would do.

And then what would we have? Maybe DeAngelo plans to rob the place. He thinks the apartment is empty because her car is gone -- the roommate used it that day. So he enters the apartment thinking that he is home free for a pre-Visalia ransacking -- only to find that Denise is home. Now, he has to deal with her and that involves disappearing her.

A refutation of this scenario would include evidence that Gyger had a different unit number than Denise. Also, maybe she never lost her keys. Then again, we know DeAngelo liked to visit his victims sometimes. The way he phoned one woman spoke to that. If he just had the address and not the keys, things come into play still.

If the locks were changed, then that's a punch in the stomach as well. How someone might find that out, I don't know at this point. Work orders for 1968 to 1971 lock changes probably aren't easy to come by.

If DeAngelo can be shown to be somewhere else at a critical time then that's a blow as well. However, it would still leave open the possibility of another person of interest.

But, in conclusion, when DeAngelo committed his crimes, he wasn't just the one-and-done type. As the Visalia Ransacker, he committed many linked crimes. As the Original Night Stalker, he committed many linked murders. He also had scores of linked rapes. That there was a rash of purse burglaries that were seemingly linked together in journalism kind of fits a young DeAngelo.

Also, we're talking about a beautiful missing woman from Sacramento. DeAngelo's name should come to mind just like Ted Bundy's should if we're talking about the same kind of missing person in Seattle.

Same-name hits

  • Be careful when doing research. There is a Denise Kathleen Anderson that's born in the same county that is NOT the missing person. She, the wrong DKA, was born in 1952.
