Tina Marie Sinclair -- Missing From West Chesterfield, New Hampshire Since 2001

Details from NamUs**:
Tina Sinclair and her daughter, Bethany Sinclair were last seen together in Chesterfield, NH, during the weekend of February 3 and 4, 2001. Prior to that weekend, Tina and her daughter, Bethany, lived in West Chesterfield at the residence of Tina's friend, Eugene Van Bowman, at 182 Mountain Road. Tina last went to her job and Bethany last attended school on February 2. Tina was 36 years old when she went missing. Bethany was 15 years old when she went missing.

VITAL DETAILS

Ethnicity: White
Sex: Female
Age at time of disappearance: 34 years old
Birthdate: between February 5th, 1966 and February 4th, 1967
  • When the birthdate isn't known, I calculate a range using the age at the date of the missing person's disappearance.
Hair: Lightbrown to blond/strawberry
Eyes: Green
Scar: Vertical surgical scar on abdomen
Height/weight: 5-foot-2 and 120 pounds
BMI*: Tina Marie Sinclair was in the normal range for BMI.
  • BMI is an abbreviation for "body mass index." It relates to an individual's height and weight. I include it believing it can help picture a missing person or describe one.
Tina Marie Sinclair has not been seen since February 4th, 2001 when she was 34 years old. Her disappearance has long been considered suspicious and authorities have feared foul play. She went missing at the same time as her daughter, Bethany Anne Sinclair.

Tina Marie Sinclair has now been missing for 20 years as of the original publication date of this blog post. Many consider her to be dead in all likelihood. When people are missing for as long as this person has been, some of their distinctive characteristics may no longer be relevant as identifiers. Scars can heal or at least become far less distinctive over time. Accordingly, the scar on her abdomen is far less of a lead in identifying her now as it was shortly after she disappeared.

Probably, the best chance of finding Tina Marie Sinclair is to find her among the unnamed Jane Does of the USA. Tina's disappearance was mentioned in conjunction with the Connecticut River. A Jane Doe that is found associated with that river would be a good candidate for comparison to Tina Marie Sinclair and/or her daughter Bethany. Websleuths or amateur investigators can try to cross-reference Tina's vitals with the estimated vitals of Jane Does.

She has now been missing for 20 years as of the original publication date of this blog post.

Bethany Anne Sinclair went missing at the same time as her mother, Tina Marie Sinclair. These two people were considered likely to be dead shortly after their disappearances. That much was stated explicitly in some media sources, like The Brattleboro Reformer out of Vermont.

Wed, Feb 4, 2004 – 9 · The Brattleboro Reformer (Brattleboro, Vermont) · Newspapers.com

There was a report of a strange phone call in this case. A female phoned Bethany's high school and claimed that she was sick but the call was not traceable, nor did the caller leave a name.

Fri, Feb 16, 2001 – 8 · The Brattleboro Reformer (Brattleboro, Vermont) · Newspapers.com

Bethany went missing as an adolescent and that's important if there are ever dental comparisons done between her and a Jane Doe. People in puberty have teeth that go through changes and perfect matches might not happen for all teeth.

This is also an individual that has now been missing for several years. One has to be careful when considering distinctive physical traits as some of these might change over the years. If she died shortly after her disappearance, then the U-shaped scar that she had on her head would not likely be an identifier. However, a Jane Doe that is found that is associated with a crucifix pendant would be a candidate for comparison. Bethany's disappearance has also been mentioned in conjunction with the Connecticut River.

Looking Back at the Non-existent Missing Person Case of Carolyn Eaton

Author: Shane Lambert

On February 14th, 1982 a Department of Public Safety officer found a dead body roadside off of Interstate 40 in Arizona. It was Carolyn Eaton, a minor who had run away from home in December of 1981. It would take 39 years before she would be identified. Below is a snippet of the original journalism from the time.

UID-AZ - #UP9864 - Valentine Sally Jane Doe - Williams, AZ - 14 Feb 1982

UID-AZ - #UP9864 - Valentine Sally Jane Doe - Williams, AZ - 14 Feb 1982 16 Feb 1982, Tue Arizona Republic (Phoenix, Arizona) Newspapers.com

The Jane Doe had numerous profiles online and she was dubbed Valentine Sally. She was talked about extensively at her Websleuths.com forum. Honest attempts at naming her were made but they all failed until the individualization process known as DNA profiling zoomed in on her. There are probably hundreds if not thousands of Does that are waiting to be identified in the same way but the highly skilled labor that's required to perform the work only inches forward case by case.

The lengthy process of identification through familial DNA requires that a Doe's DNA be compared to a relative's. The problem is, finding a relative to compare to isn't easy: one has to have their DNA in an accessible databank to begin with. If a relative is found, that still doesn't end the task of matching the Jane Doe to someone who is missing. If the relative was a distant one, then the branches of the family tree have to be explored to find a worthwhile candidate for comparison. This process can be difficult.

What might be easier is good old-fashioned online Websleuthing. The catch is that in order for the Websleuths to do their thing, there has to be a report online of the missing person. For Carolyn Eaton, I found no missing person reports associated with her name prior to her identification as Valentine Sally.

The Jane Doe mystery was popular enough among Websleuths that if Carolyn Eaton simply had a missing person's profile online at one of the websites that offer such publishing that the case of Valentine Sally might have been solved a long time ago. Timely solving would do a lot: it would help apprehend any murderer, for starters. Why should we let those guys grow old in the comforts of their homes?

Adding profiles to databases would streamline the process of identifying Does. The familial DNA process is too slow and too expensive. Websleuths aren't necessarily fast -- but they are cheap because they are volunteers and they are hobbyists. They are effective too but there's that 'catch' to think about: where the DNA people need DNA profiles to compare, if Websleuths are going to identify a Jane doe then they need a Missing Person's report to compare to.

If you have filed a police report for a missing person, then that's a good first step in trying to find the person. However, you should also make an effort to get the case profiled at Canada's Missing or NamUs, the latter being for the USA. If you can't get something up through those avenues in a timely manner, there's always DoeNetwork, CharleyProject, or this blog that you're looking at right now.

Dorothy Forstein -- Missing Since 1949 From Philadelphia

Missing Person: Dorothy Forstein
Aliases: Dorothy Cooper (maiden name), Dora Cooper

This is the description of the disappearance according to NamUs**:

In 1945 Dorothy went shopping. She was seen returning home in the evening, and a neighbor thought 'someone was with her, or walking behind her.' Dorothy was attacked and nearly beaten to death. They never found who did it; robbery was not a motive, and Dorothy's husband Jules was ruled out as a suspect.

Then, in 1950 [Note: this date is an error in NamUs], Jules called his wife to tell him he was going to a political banquet. Dorothy seemed in good spirits. She said, "Don't forget to miss me!" before she hung up. When he returned home later that evening, his wife was gone. The eldest daughter was away from home, but the two younger children were found huddled together in a bedroom. None of Dorothy's personal belongings were missing and the front door was locked.

The older of the two children at home that night (she would have been around 9 years old at that time) said she woke up and went to her mother's room. She saw a man coming up the stairs. She saw her mother lying on the carpet, face down. The man picked up her mother and told the little girl to go back to bed, that her Mommy was sick. She described her mother, who was wearing a red nightgown and red slippers, and the stranger, who was wearing a brown cap and a brown jacket with "something stuck in his shirt." He took the mother downstairs and out the door.

Nothing was disturbed in the house and there weren't any fingerprints.

Dorothy Forstein has never been seen again.

  • Jewelry: Plain narrow yellow gold wedding band without any inscriptions (per NamUs; not mentioned in the blog’s narrative but included here for completeness based on the official record)
Height/weight: 5-foot-2 and 125 pounds
BMI*: Dorothy Forstein was in the normal range for BMI.
  • Please, Google-search BMI if you aren't familiar with the phrase. I think it's an important tool to be aware of when working on missing person cases.
Dorothy Forstein, a missing person, was last heard from on October 18th, 1949 when she was 40 years old. Dorothy Forstein has now been missing for 72 years as of the original publication date of this blog post.

What stands out with this case, is the description of events surrounding her disappearance. NamUs has selected an incident that happened in 1945 as important of inclusion in this case. What does, if anything, the crime from 1945 have to do with her disappearance years later?

Firstly, there seem to be some inconsistencies with the dates. According to the NamUs description, Dorothy went missing in 1950. However, that contradicts the last-seen date from the same source. When I consulted newspaper articles, I determined that the likely date of her disappearance was October 18th, 1949.

The child that reportedly saw what happened was named Marcy Forstein. She was not believed when she first regaled her version of events.

However, a psychologist evaluated the child and reported back that she was, in fact, being truthful. That's all according to an article from The Courier-Journal on Monday, October 24th, 1949. It reports that the disappearance of Dorothy Forstein happened on the previous Tuesday, which is how I determined a disappearance date of October 18th, 1949 (contrary to NamUs). The newspaper clipping is below. It is recommended reading for this case as it contains the young girl's description of the abduction.

Mon, Oct 24, 1949 – Page 1 · The Courier-Journal (Louisville, Kentucky) · Newspapers.com
Another clipping that has to do with the case is one regarding the assault that she suffered. This happened in her home according to the journalism from 1945. It was reported that the person who assaulted her was interested in "revenge" for something.

Fri, Jan 26, 1945 – 2 · Courier-Post (Camden, New Jersey) · Newspapers.com
That Dorothy was the wife of a judge cannot be discounted when it comes to the "revenge" motive, in my opinion. We can imagine that there are likely to be a lot of shady characters out there that would like to get revenge against judges. Jules Forstein, Dorothy's husband, died on December 30th, 1955 according to his death certificate.

Many years have passed and this case has not been solved. It's very likely that the perpetrator is dead and it is much more likely that Dorothy is as well. But the events surrounding this disappearance might lead one to conjecture the following:

  1. Someone with a grudge against Jules Forstein attacked his wife in 1945.
  2. When she survived the event, this same person returned in 1949.
  3. On the second occasion, he abducted Dorothy to ensure that she couldn't recover.
Along these lines, one place to look is at Jules Forstein's career. What kind of judge was he? Who did he render a bitter verdict against?

Strange Details in the Case

There are strange details in this case.

Firstly, according to the article above from October 1949, Jules may have arrived home just 15 minutes after the abduction. That's a pretty close shave for the perpetrator to operate within.

23 Oct 1949, Sun The Philadelphia Inquirer (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) Newspapers.com
Also, I found the description of the perpetrator's behavior quite strange. As he abducted Dorothy he was seen by Marcy and he realized that she had seen him.

The perpetrator was then cordial with the child eyewitness who saw him committing a felony. That's not like most caught-in-the-act-of-committing-a-felony types that you learn about. That the man that Marcy saw was so cool as to pat her on the head while operating in such a tight window was hard to accept.

Lastly, I thought it was strange that Jules did not believe his daughter. There was, after all, a previous attack to be aware of. Yet, I think some of these strange occurrences are explainable, which I turn to now.

Theories and Assumptions About Jules Forstein’s Role and the Motive

The following assumptions, which are speculative, offer additional perspectives on Jules Forstein’s reactions and the potential motives behind Dorothy’s disappearance, considering his position as a judge:

  • Jules did not believe his child, Marcy, at first because, as a judge, his training or experience would be to be skeptical of child witnesses, who are often fanciful and frivolous.
  • The disappearance of Dorothy may have been an attempt to negatively affect Jules’ career, suggesting a workplace opponent as the perpetrator.
  • Presumably, this person would know that Jules was at the banquet, indicating they planned the abduction around his absence. This also could explain the perpetrator's confidence in operating in a tight window, especially if he had an update from a partner who had eyes on the judge.
  • Possibly, Jules wanted the media to be quiet over the matter, not because he was involved, but because he didn’t see any point in having his career hurt by the negative press.

These assumptions provide a framework for exploring Jules’ mindset and the possible intent of the abductor, though they remain speculative without concrete evidence.

How to Find Dorothy Among the Jane Does

The best chance of finding Dorothy is if she is already a Jane Doe that's been found. She disappeared close to the New Jersey border so it is advisable to look at both Pennsylvania and New Jersey Jane Does. Use broad ranges for age and height. If you come across any Jane Does, ever, that are believed to have died in 1949 or thereabouts -- that are also believed to be wearing pajamas -- then that's a great case to cross-reference against Dorothy's missing person case. It would be wise to look for "pajamas" or "pyjamas" in NamUs from time to time to see if any Jane Does that might be her are added to the database.

Thomas William Richey -- Missing From Fishing Trip Since 1950

Details from NamUs**: "Thomas 'Tommy' Richey left home to go fishing on the Rogue River on July 11, 1950. He liked to fish in an area where there was a cable car above the river that you could move to the middle and fish from above. His fishing pole as well as several fish he caught were found inside the cable car. He has not been seen or heard from since that day. The cable car was braked in the middle of the river which is why it was presumed something happened causing him to fall or jump and ultimately drown. The cable car and fishing hole are located 4 miles outside Prospect, Oregon on Mill Creek Lane and 6 miles upriver from the Lost Creek Dam."

Case Form F:

(1) Subject known and seen to be swept into flood waters or a river.*
(2) Subject not seen again.
*Loose fit: Thomas was not absolutely known to have entered the river.

Thomas William Richey, a missing person, was last heard from on July 11th, 1950 when he was 16 years old. He has now been missing for 71 years as of the original publication date of this blog post.

Since this individual has been missing for several decades some might think that it's pointless or futile to work on the case. However, in my opinion, there's not just the missing person to look at but historical matters involved and coming to better understand the issues that surround disappearances. This case did remind me of a few other cases and that's not to say that they are related in an investigative way.

Firstly, it reminded me of the case of Duane Ludwig Winget. This is an individual who has been missing since 1962. Winget was known to have fallen in a river while in a position directly above it and central to the river. He was performing a hand-over-hand military exercise crossing the Nisqually River when he lost his balance at the same moment that his safety equipment failed. Nearly 60 years later, he has yet to turn up.

Richey wasn't performing a military exercise when he went missing -- he was fishing. However, he seems to have been in a similar position relative to the river as Winget -- directly above it and central to the river. In neither case do we have someone jumping or falling from a bridge, nor do we have someone falling from a riverbank. Richey, judging by the position of his fishing rod and the fish he caught, was in a cable car. That much was communicated in the journalism that was published the day after his disappearance.

12 Jul 1950, Wed Medford Mail Tribune (Medford, Oregon) Newspapers.com

Picturing this cable car is important for making a reasonable guess as to what happened to Richey. I don't picture the kind of cable car that's associated with San Francisco transit. Instead, I picture the swaying small ones that you find in the mountains of western Canada and the western USA.

The picture below is of me in a cable car in the Rocky Mountains. If you have ever been in one, then you know that it doesn't always feel stable. I couldn't imagine trying to fish from one of these without causing it to tilt a little.

In short, I do think that Thomas William Richey simply fell from the cable car and drowned in the Rogue River. It certainly isn't beyond belief that he has never turned up: after all, Winget was known to have fallen in a river from a similar position and he has yet to be found.

The other scenario that I considered with Richey was that he had been abducted. The case of Dario Cicolecchia was something that I thought of. He went fishing, he left his bicycle visible on the side of the road, and a passerby that happened to be a pedophile saw it. However, Dario was fishing from a shoreline, while Richey's fishing pole and the fish he caught were found in the cable car. Abduction from a cable car would be difficult.

Fishing isn't passive in any sense. There is tugging, pulling, and fighting for balance. Fishing from a cable car just doesn't sound like a safe thing to do. This missing person is likely due to youth-related poor judgment. If he is found, the remains are likely to be skeletal and I would imagine scattered.

I did receive a reply to this article by an individual that identified as the person who opened the missing person case for Thomas. This is what was communicated from her:

"When I opened the missing persons case that appears on NamUs I didn't quite have all the details of the disappearance yet and just wanted to have DNA collected to compare to Tommy's brother (still alive) to see if there was a match in CODIS. Unfortunately, we did not get any results from that. The cable car in this case is still the most mind-boggling part. It was reported to some degree and I also discovered that the cable car had a puller and winch that had to be used manually to stop, start, and brake the cable car. Tommy's brother and dad are the ones who originally went to the cable car when looking for Tommy and discovered the fish, rod and creel inside it. It was in the middle of the river and Tommy's brother had to shimmy the cable line hand over fist to get into it. Also, Tommy's brother insists the cable car was not something you could easily fall out of. While they didn't actually fish from the cable car itself, the boys used it to cross the river to seek out better fishing areas.

The cable car was built and placed near Prospect on the Rogue River by the Army Corps of Engineers who were scouting the area for a potential dam site in the 1930s. The Lost Creek Dam is what eventually transpired from this endeavor. I have contacted the Army Corps of Engineers to see if they have records of what the cable car looked like since I cannot find anything even remotely close to what Tommy's brother describes. Unfortunately I haven't gotten anything worthwhile. The cable car is described as being 7 feet in length, 4 ½ -5 ft wide and about 5 feet high and made of lumber with metal strapping.

An accidental fall resulting in drowning was the main conclusion that law enforcement drew to explain Tommy's disappearance. After a week-long search, the community was asked to keep an eye out for his body. No trace of Tommy's body, clothing, or glasses has ever been recovered. As the decades have passed, there has been some speculation as to whether or not Tommy may have staged the scene and purposely went missing, either of his own free will or some type of foul play. However, there has been very little evidence to support these theories either. I believe understanding more about the cable car may help shed some light on what really happened.

Thank you for taking an interest in this case. Even if we never find out what really happened, I appreciate that his story is being told.

Thanks,
Heather V."

  • Please, Google-search BMI if you aren't familiar with the phrase. I think it's an important tool to be aware of when working on missing person cases.
Darla Lee Miller was last heard from on June 1, 1996, when she was 33 years of age. She has now been missing for 25 years as of the original publication date of this blog post. At the time of this publication, the missing person would be 58 years old.

When I look over the case information, I do see a slight contradiction in the information. According to the NamUs description, she was last seen in the summer of 1996. However, her last-seen date is June 1st, 1996. Technically, June 1st would still be in the spring, in fact, that's not even getting too technical as the start of June is a full three weeks before the start of summer.

Often, when the date of someone's disappearance isn't known, NamUs will just enter the first of the month that they disappeared. It's not really clear from the NamUs account when this individual was last seen.

Also, at the time of her disappearance, she evidently had a "young son." When I plugged Darla Lee Miller into Ancestry's index of public records, I was able to find some addresses for her. However, none of the addresses had date ranges associated with them. Furthermore, some of the addresses were associated with the area that she was last seen in. These were likely addresses that she used before she disappeared. I was sure I was looking at the right Darla Lee Miller because of birthdate matches in the records.

A good research angle on this case is just to find out if her son is now an adult and see what he can contribute to the details of this case. That could be done by searching her former addresses to see if her son's name appears anywhere. I think, I was able to find a brother, however, I wasn't able to find a way to contact him online. I've kept addresses and names in my notes and may look further.

What stood out with this case was that, at the time of the original publication, it was the oldest case in NamUs regarding update-sorting for females, last updated on January 11th, 2011. There are older cases outright, but the lack of updates suggested it was very cold.

As of my latest check in 2025, the NamUs profile has been refreshed with more details, though the circumstances remain sparse. It simply states that she was "last seen June 27, 2008" (note: this conflicts with the 2007 date elsewhere, likely a typo on NamUs).

The updated NamUs profile now confirms her height as 5'5" (65 inches), weight as 155 lbs, and includes brown/red hair and blue eyes, but still lacks details on clothing, accessories, or distinctive features beyond that.

I previously found this person documented in Ancestry under her maiden name, Terri Ann Dubose. Ancestry listed addresses after her disappearance date, which I submitted to NamUs years ago. It’s still unclear what triggers an address update on Ancestry, so this could mean anything—or nothing. No confirmation has emerged from those leads as of 2025.

If someone that knew her personally can contact the site, indicating that she is still missing, that would be appreciated. You can post comments after the article for follow-up.

I still don’t recommend spending a lot of time working on this case. It remains strange—no Facebook groups, no news links, and minimal attention on NamUs beyond the basics. The conflicting last-seen dates (2007 vs. 2008) add to the confusion, but I’m sticking with June 27th, 2007, based on CharleyProject and earlier data.
