Richard W. Powell was last heard from on March 22nd, 1984 when he was 18 years of age. This individual has now been missing for about 37 years as of the original publication date of this blog post.

I didn't find any media coverage in newspaper databases. This person was in Ancestry, however, I didn't see any research angle that could shed light on anything unless a family member could be found that was willing to open up the details of this case to an online audience. There appeared to be a couple of photos of him in the 1982 yearbook for Sam Houston High School but I think they were younger photos than the one that circulates with his various profiles.

The missing person did not have any articles or items associated with his missing person's reports, at least of the sources that I consulted. It would be interesting to know where exactly the car was found and why the police thought that foul play was plausible.

Richard W. Powell had the following distinctive characteristic: 

• a mole on his right cheek
• the pinkie fingers on both hands are permanently curved inward 

I wondered if the curving pinky fingers were born deformations that might show up in his skeletal remains. It might do well for Websleuths or amateur investigators to look at John Doe databases for this skeletal detail on an unidentified person.

Crystal Ann Fox, a missing person, was last heard from on December 11th, 2008 when she was 29 years old. Her vehicle was found on December 30th, 2008 but it's not clear if she was seen that day. I do see some posters for her stating that she was last seen on December 30th, 2008, however, I think that was simply the date that her vehicle was found. Of course, it could have been there for a number of days before that point.

The exact parking lot may have been the Alexander Avenue lot by Vista Point. That would place the vehicle on the north side of the Golden Gate Bridge.

This individual has now been missing for about 13 years as of the original publication date of this blog post. She had the following distinctive characteristics: 'Left eye and tongue-multiple ear piercings.'

The circumstances preceding and after her disappearance are as follows:

• She lost her job.
• She ended a relationship.
• She sold her possessions.
• Her car was found near a bridge.
• She has never been heard from since.

Given the vehicle's proximity to the Golden Gate Bridge, that bridge's reputation as a known hot-spot for suicide, and that she may have been despondent, the possibility of suicide cannot be discounted in my view. However, there are nature trails in that area as well.

There is a chance that she might be in the Jane Doe databases. If that is true, then her piercings may not identify her. Any bone injuries that this individual had or surgical implants (ie. a metal plate) may help with this case if anyone knows her medical history.

Mattie Lou Zabel -- Missing From Cedar Falls, Iowa Since 1978

"Mattie worked as a teacher's aide at River Hills School in Cedar Falls, Iowa. She was reported missing to the Cedar Falls Police Department on March 21, 1978. She left a frozen chicken thawing in the kitchen sink for dinner. No clothing was taken and she would not have had the assets to walk away. The day after she went missing, one of her sons found her car at Black Hawk Park in Cedar Falls. The vehicle was found locked with Zabel’s purse inside. An extensive search by Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Deputies, search dogs, divers and a National Guard helicopter turned up no trace of Mattie."

Mattie Lou Zabel, a missing person, was last heard from on March 21st, 1978 when she was 45 years old. This individual has now been missing for about 43 years as of the original publication date of this blog post. 

I did find that this person had some information available at Ancestry. Her information there takes for granted that she died at about the time of her disappearance.

One detail that I think is missing from a lot of the online profiles for this individual is that she was seen at the park where her car was found. The way the NamUs description reads, we're to believe that the frozen chicken thawing in the sink (it was on the counter according to the husband) was the last evidence that was seen of her. However, the park staff saw her at the park. Furthermore, footprints that were presumed to be of the missing woman were found near the river.

What would have been interesting in this case if they found footprints leading away from the river or a second set of footprints near hers. But in early journalism after the disappearance, there was no indication of foul play. 

The river around where the footprints were found was searched many times by divers. About four months after she disappeared, someone spotted a body in the same river downstream in a town called Gilbertville. The sheriff of Cedar Falls wondered if it was that of the missing woman. The person who saw this body claimed that it had long hair and a green shirt. I did not find any follow-up journalism on this lead until 1992 when there was a suggestion that it was someone else. It seems that a description of what the missing person was wearing as per the park staff would have helped.

In addition to the NamUs description at the start, according to her case summary at Iowa Cold Cases all of the following are true:

• she had a husband and three children
• "Police hypothesized that Zabel either fell into the swift and swollen Cedar River while taking a walk or committed suicide"
• This missing person was known to struggle with depression but was thought to be improving
• Her credit cards were not used in the years after her disappearance and she was declared dead in absentia seven years later

Penney Faye Cruser, a missing person, was, according to her NamUs profile, last heard from on March 21st, 1997 when she was 30 years old. However, I did find some inconsistencies between her NamUs profile and journalism on the matter. It seems that March 1997 may have been when she was reported missing.

The missing person was mentioned in conjunction with a serial killer in the Spokane area in a news article from the year 2000. His name was Robert L. Yates (Jr.). From the article below, you can see that the last-contact date may actually have been December 1996.

This individual has now been missing for about 24 years as of the original publication date of this blog post. People that have been missing for several years, as this person has been, might not be identifiable through some of their distinctive characteristics. For instance, if Cruser died near the time of her disappearance then her tattoos might not be useful in identifying due to decomposition.

Her profile at CharleyProject indicates that she was a drug user, that she was disabled, and she did not like taking her medication.

There were not a lot of articles or possessions associated with this missing person. However, please note the following: she may have carried a weapon. Presumptively, I would think this meant a handgun, however, the term "weapon" is much broader than that. You could look for Jane Does in databases that were found in proximity to a gun or even a blade of some sort.

Penney Faye Cruser had the following distinctive characteristic: she broke her right hand in 1985 and she previously had broken her nose. Sometimes these kinds of bone injuries can be useful when it comes to identifying someone because the injuries, even when healed, are detectable in skeletal remains. When Jane Does are entered into databases, they often have skeletal injuries listed.

Kay Patricia Berryhill, a possible homicide victim, was last heard from on March 21st, 1995 when she was 36 years of age. In a search for her on Ancestry, I found an address for Wrangell, Alaska. I wondered if this was where she went missing from as opposed to Ketchikan, which would be the major urban area in the part of America that Kay went missing in. There is a ferry service between Ketchikan and Wrangell. 

This individual has now been missing for about 26 years as of the original publication date of this blog post. I found a couple of details interesting in this case. Firstly, that her dogs returned home from the walk she disappeared on stood out to me. 

You do not come across many missing person profiles with that particular detail. To me, that detail indicates that she was not looking to commit suicide or disappear voluntarily. I don't think someone that had either of those kinds of plans would take their dogs with them, yet, I can't call that foolproof by any reasonable stretch.

Also, whether she went missing in Wrangell or Ketchikan, this person went missing on an island. There are only so many places she could be if she suffered something accidental or non-clandestine.

In relation to criminal possibilities with this disappearance, I found one newspaper article on this disappearance. The article mentioned Kay in relation to Wrangell, it seems to have misidentified her age, and it was published about 4 months after her disappearance. The article said that the FBI was looking for a man who was mentioned in conjunction with Kay Berryhill's disappearance. I don't know how their search for this man ended as I found no follow-up articles.

Kay Patricia Berryhill may have had the following articles when she disappeared: black sweat pants, a black sweatshirt, a blue jacket, and brown boots. Kathy Anne Lulloff has not been seen since July 19th, 1971 when she was 15 years old. She may have had the following articles when she disappeared: a black belt with a brass buckle, white shoes, a blue shirt, and denim blue pants that were bell-bottom styled. These items might be in a Jane Doe profile. If so, the details of the cases can be compared.

This individual has now been missing for about 50 years as of the original publication date of this blog post. There was some minor media coverage with this case. Apparently, Kathy had been hitchhiking at about the time of her disappearance, she had some kind of argument with the people she was traveling with, and she walked into thick forest or bush in Canada. From the article I read, I got the impression that this person may have been an American national.

When I learned that the missing person may have been American, it confused me a little because the profile for the missing person is on a Canadian website. If she was from Flint, then it seems that she should have a NamUs profile.

I did find an American with the name of Kathryn Lulloff that lived in Wisconsin. That's a state that is not that far from Ontario. I will note that Kathy Anne Lulloff, the missing person, and Kathryn Lulloff have a very close age match. The missing person's birthdate range based on her age at the time of disappearance matches Kathryn Lulloff's birth year of 1955. But I also came to the opinion that pictures of the two were probably not a match.

When I sought to authenticate them as one and the same, I found that Kathry Lulloff had the middle initial "M." after some research while the missing person had the middle initial "A." If you go down this route like me, then be aware of that contradiction.

I was not able to find Kathy Anne Lulloff in Ancestry, at least not with confidence that it was a profile of the missing person. I felt that she should have been there, however, I will note some difficulty in finding this person in a timely manner based on all the derivations of Kathy (ie. Kate, Katherine, Kathryn) and Anne (ie. Ann, Annette) that are possible.

Furthermore, she was last seen near Seabrook Lake Road in Ontario. I was able to find Seabrook Lake just fine and I think that the road will be near this lake. However, I was not able to find the exact road. It seemed to be a very secluded area.

My guess with this case would simply be that after storming away from her friends after an argument, she simply may have gotten lost. If that happens and adrenaline takes over, then she could walk a long way -- in the wrong direction. A large search area was probably needed for this case but if you read the newspaper clipping from Michigan, the police described very difficult conditions.

(Found) Angela K. Smith -- Missing in Kentucky Since March 2016

Update (October 2025): The missing person case of Angela K. Smith has been solved. Human remains discovered in March 2021 in the Daniel Boone National Forest, Clay County, Kentucky, were positively identified as Angela K. Smith in September 2024 through forensic testing. The case has been removed from NamUs (MP42527) and is now being investigated as a homicide by the Kentucky State Police. No further details on suspects or arrests have been released as of this update.

Angela K. Smith was last heard from on March 20th, 2016 when she was 30 years of age. What stands out with her disappearance was that she has not been seen since her house caught fire. This individual has now been missing for about 5 years as of the original publication date of this blog post.

Research into this case did reveal one inconsistency. NamUs says her last contact was March 20th, 2016, however, a news source (Mountain News in Eastern Kentucky) said she was last seen on March 12th. Sometimes "last seen" and "last contact" can mean different things, however.

Smith, the missing person, lived in what I think was a trailer home in the Red Bird community. One source, quoted below, said she lived with her boyfriend. This trailer home burned down in March 2016. Angela was not reported missing until March 27th, 2016 (WKYT):

30-year-old Angela Smith of Clay County has been missing for more than a month. Angela's sister, Donna Fryman, says she grew worried when no one in their family heard from Angela on Easter day, March 27.

Donna went to police later that day and learned the home on Little Creek Road where Angela lived with her boyfriend had burned to the ground days earlier. Police say the last time anyone has seen Angela was March 12.

Kentucky State Police tell us they've had cadaver dogs at the site of what's left of the home, but found nothing suspicious. Police say they aren't sure if the 30-year-old's disappearance and the fire are tied together. KSP says Angela's boyfriend has been interviewed several times.

'Missing after a house fire' reminded me of a different and unrelated case that I covered at this site. Ricky Jean Bryant's home caught on fire and she was never seen after it happened. She was thought to be inside the home as it burned down, according to the journalism I researched. Bryant was a toddler and I wondered if her small volume meant her remains would be more likely to be entirely consumed by a house fire.

In contrast, Smith was an adult in the normal range for Body Mass Index. According to what I've read with house fire situations, the expectation is that if an adult dies in a house fire then the remains should be recovered. Adult-sized bones are not thought to be consumed entirely by flames.

So what does it mean for an adult's house to burn down, the person goes missing, and then that person's remains are not in the remains of the house fire? One scenario would be that she was abducted and/or murdered and the person that disappeared her created the house fire in order to destroy evidence or create a diversion of some sort. While that is just an opinion, fire as a means of destroying evidence is thought to have been used in many clandestine cases.
